MSG Plus! - update warning!

Question

FYI, When you install the automatically downloaded MSN Plus update (support for 6.2), it automatically installs a toolbar and some other kind(s) of spyware onto your computer. One was installed into the Program Files/Mp3Grid folder and another was installed into Documents and Settings/Local Data/Temp (Enable view hidden folders to view this folder).

So be careful when you try to update... and download it separately if possible, since the installer would probably have an option to disable the ad/spyware (unless Patchou has become greedier).

Edit: I was wrong :o. As long as you choose "I refuse, do not install the sponsor program" when the window that looks like an EULA agreement pops up, the adware/spyware will NOT install.

If you installed it with the sponsorship program already, follow this guide to remove it.

Also, feel free to flame me for my blunder (even Patchou agrees! do what your god says!). Hateful attention isn't that bad sometimes, especially when other people put a lot of effort into it .

Huh, how then, have I used Plus! for over two years, and have never had a problem with spyware?

You idiots really should quit spreading your FUD. Patchou has forsaken a lot to program Plus! (including risking his relationship with his significant other) for us, and release it for FREE, with the OPTION OF NOT INSTALLING SPYWARE. You ungrateful ###### better power off your computers, unplug them, and pull out your tin foil hats... Patchou? Greedy? That's complete bull****. So you n00bs, STFU.

Totally Agreed! Patchou is my hero

And he's not greedy at all

Me and the millions of other people releasing under GPL and GNU would.

Here's the thing. When you are older and actually need to make money for yourself, releasing code under the GPL all day isn't going to do you much good, unless you don't mind using the library computers and sleeping on the bench outside. Sure, you may do it as a hobby, but putting a 'sponsor' program in to help out a little extra from all the thankless ****s who use your software won't seem like such a bad idea all of a sudden.

I'd like to see some examples of the code you have released.

BECAUSE THIS IS FOR THE UPDATE, NOT THE FULL INSTALL.

Please read the thread before replying. Anyways, the updates EULA does state that there is spyware and you have to agree to installing it. For the update it is NOT an option, unless its been changed in the last day. Period.

I choose not to use it because sure it was in the EULA, but it didn't mention it in the setup, so obviously it was meant to not be noticed by most users. And to me that's just unethical.

Hello, I'm from Messenger Plus! Community forums and I'd like to point out some things about the sponsor program.

The sponsor program isn't the usual ad-ware crap you see around on the internet. It's specifically designed for Patchou (creator of Messenger Plus!) not to be intrusive. Attempting to remove the sponsor program by anti-spyware tools or just deleting it isn't the way to go about it. You must uninstall Plus! and re-install it and deny the sponsor program (I attached an image).

If you have installed the sponsor program and have tried to remove it by anti-spyware or deleting it manually you will need to re-install Plus! with the sponsor program and then uninstall it and then re-install it without the sponsor program...

More information at http://msgplus.mybboard.com/showthread.php?tid=21598

I hope this experience hasn't discouraged you from using Messenger Plus!

Stop the whining. It?s free software and if you don?t like it then STFU. Ungrateful people make me sick.

The point of this thread was to WARN people who update and because the setup does not specify that 3rd party programs are being installed, even under "Custom Installation" then a lot of people may not know. So the person wasn't whining. You seem to be however. Ironic.

Sorry about not combining both posts.

When i do the auto update it just downloads the msgplus files to my system and installs them, it has always asked me to install the sponser program and i have said no on every occasion, if you just keep clicking next and miss the option not to install it then it is your own fault.

As I said in the other thread in this forum:

Go to START - Run and then type in CMD.exe to start the Command Prompt window. navitgate to the folder where you store the Messenger Plus setup file and then type in the following line.

msgplus.exe /SilentInstallNoSponsor

This will silently install Messenger Plus to the default program folder (C:\Program Files\Messenger Plus! 2) and also automatically denies to install the spyware all without the user interaction.

there are always some fools who think they are doing others a service due to their own lack of intelligence.

It has always been in the open that there is an optional spyware included in msn plus. You get this option when you install and update. If go bitching, after you fail to read and understand this, and the spyware is installed then you are the idiot.

This topic is so tired and old now that its not even funny anymore. Get a life!

Thanks for that post :).

And to settle it - not matter WHAT, in the recent versions you will ALWAYS be asked if you want to install the sponsor.

Instead of installing spyware why doesnt he just charge for the program, After reading this i have come to the conclusion that many of you would pay for it. Even a small charge would be acceptable this way its a win win situation . . . i.e we the user get no spyware and he gets money.

Well there are options to donate on the MsgPlus website, I think. I really do hate it when people start saying that MsgPlus is useless spyware and no one should use it. It is the own person's fault. I know that most of this has already been said somewhere down the line, but it really does annoy me!

Anubis (welcome to neowin), thanks for posting the screenshot. I hope you will appreciate we have many members here who are firstly afraid of paying for anything (including good software like patchou's) or looking for a on/off button. It's about trade offs in the end. Its only 2 clicks and a bit of bashing on the keyboard to post a rant, yet it takes a lot longer to go find the solution :)

Actually, I'm glad there are dumb people that don't read what they are installing. They are the ones that, through their ignorance, allow us that actually read stuff to enjoy the program. Thanks guys! You just paid a couple more bills for patchou to let him keep making a great program that I and various other competent individuals use.

EDIT: Do you notice that every new release of MSN Plus (after he included the sponsor program) there is someone that comes online and complains about it because they didn't read?

Or what about when they come online and start calling it a trojan and crap like that, thinking it's their civic duty to warn people about it when their own damn fault

That?s completely beside the point, what about those who trust the author, love the program and do want to support it? They choose to install the sponsor. The agreement is useless, thmajorityi> of the people who use this software are morons and don?t read stuff like that anyway, this thread is proof of that. When they install this so called sponsor they are totally disappointed and that trust is broken, what kind of <bleep> knowingly puts malware into their software?! (there are much better 'sponsor' deals than Lop) If donations aren?t enough for him, then perhaps he needs to be focusing more on making the software decent enough so people appreciate it and do donate. The sponsor agreement page is very misleading anyway, as I said, considering the majority of the users, a large textbox full of text and 2 options is just another nuisance when installing (i.e. the actually software EULA, disagreeing won't get you anywhere), most software with sponsors I?ve seen has a checkbox at the end after the main program is installed (on the "Finish" screen), you cant possibly complain about that.

I wonder if the idiots complaining about spyware realise they have made complete asses of themselves?

You have to make a conscious choice in the installer, both manual and automatic, and they all have actually clicked YES to install the sponsor...

So there is actually NO NEED to warn anyone about this, because the warning has already been given, along with an option not to install it. IN THE PROGRAM ITSELF!!!
