MSG Plus! - update warning!

Question

FYI, When you install the automatically downloaded MSN Plus update (support for 6.2), it automatically installs a toolbar and some other kind(s) of spyware onto your computer. One was installed into the Program Files/Mp3Grid folder and another was installed into Documents and Settings/Local Data/Temp (Enable view hidden folders to view this folder).

So be careful when you try to update... and download it separately if possible, since the installer would probably have an option to disable the ad/spyware (unless Patchou has become greedier).

Edit: I was wrong :o. As long as you choose "I refuse, do not install the sponsor program" when the window that looks like an EULA agreement pops up, the adware/spyware will NOT install.

If you installed it with the sponsorship program already, follow this guide to remove it.

Also, feel free to flame me for my blunder (even Patchou agrees! do what your god says!). Hateful attention isn't that bad sometimes, especially when other people put a lot of effort into it .

It's so selfish that you don't get the choice with autoupdate because the less knowledgeable about computers, and even some that are knowledgeable about computers don't know and havn't been warned about the manditory spyware if you use the autoupdate. How can we not say **** YOU Patchou if you exploit these computers like this.

the autoupdate downloads the exact same file that you can get off of www.msgplus.net..

read installers man.. i mean, if his installer said it would delete your windows if you accept people would click it anyways..

Of course I'm earning some money with the sponsor, if I didn't, you would all still be using Messenger Plus! 2.20 :). Also, I do not support spywares, and that's precisely why I bundle an adware program, that is very very different. One of the differences is that you can uninstall my sponsor in 5 seconds, without using anything else that my own uninstaller. The other is that it only installs a search bar and some popups, not a tool that checks what emails you are sending.

As for reading the agreement, I agree that most people don't, myself included. That's why I add my own text at the beginning of the agreement (text that is translated if you use another language) and that's also why Sponsor Agreement is displayed in bold at the top of the window. And once again, I do not prevent anyone from uninstalling the sponsor program (the latest version even regenerates the sponsor uninstaller if it has been deleted by a third party like adaware!... what else do you want me to do? :p).

Just wanted to give some more info about the situation... I'll be able to link to this message when people will complain again after Messenger Plus! 3 is released ;).

Thanks again to all of you for your kind support (and for those who wonder, the emoticon problem introduced by Messenger 6.2 has been solved today and the fix will be part of Plus!3).

Well said Patchou!!!

if u have any suggestion on how to improve the sponsor's agreement, u can always go to our forums and post it :) ( http://msgplus.mybboard.com ).

Patchou will be happy to read new ideas.. indeed, he completely changed the look of the window after people gave him some suggestions ;) (remember that the "install sponsor" option was ticked by default at the beggining, now it isn't :))

Don't worry Patch, we still love you ;)

We, (who actually don't assume every piece of s/w will not install sponsor stuff), would like to advise others, (who do install s/w with a click, click, click), would like to shout "PATCHOU, PATCHOU, HE'S OUR MAN, IF HE CAN'T DO IT, NO ONE CAN"

:D

I have used "MESSENGER PLUS", (not MSN Plus) for a long long time, and have NEVER, EVER had any spyware on my pc from it.

Why? Cus I RTFM!!! I read what I am installing. I don't just click next, next, next.

Alot of these people who complain about spyware, are the very people who click "Yes" when they see a diolog box pop up from a web page asking to install "dialer plugin", & click "Install Me.bat" when they get an email, and all without reading or looking at what they are doing or scanning for viruses.

Hence millions of viruses floating around the net.

Get a life people. Accept that YOU f*cked up and be adult about it. Don't blame others for your shortfalls.[b/]

That's better. Got that off my chest now. :woot:

Here's my vote for Patchou to append the licensing agreement with

"I understand that if I click Yes and agree to install the sponsor program, I also give various members of the Neowin forums the right to cut off my penis if I start moaning and bitching that Plus! installed "spyware"/"adware" on my computer."

We can only hope people so dense won't continue to reproduce...

Thank you guys for defending my little program. It is true that the sponsor has never been forced to anyone's computer and it enver will. And the uninstaller works perfectly so I suggest you not to try to delete the sponsor's files yourself if you want to remove it.

Messenger Plus! 3 won't have an Automatic/Custom installation mode anymore, that way, I guess it will prevent posts like "nothign is asked in automatic mode", which is not true as you all already know. As for the auto-update, I may have to add an extra warning during the update, I don't know... it's always the same story each time I release one. I'll think about it.

Thanks for the support guys! It's much aprpeciated :). It's just too bad that the whole first page of this thread contains only negative things and insults regarding me about my software. That's what everyone will see when surfing on this topic.

Patchou

Yey...Patchou joined Neowin. Welcome to Neowin Patchou. Don't worry, people wont start realizing Messenger Plus! (again people..it's Messenger Plus! not MSN Plus!) is the best add ons for MSN Messenger until they have really used it :) . I think this issue about adware is non-debatetable. We all use the program, and whatever the creator wants to put inside, it's his bussiness. Moreover, when you expect free...that's what you get. So, Please stop ranting  . Just bare with it .

EDIT: I have been translating Messenger for Indonesian language. And, It's one hell of a job. I am happy to do it. Nobody pays me. Neither Patchou receives any money out of this program. So, for you guys out there that has been getting the adwares :shifty: , please do what people has been posted to get rid of the adwares and give it a try. You will love this program. Guarantee!

You guys criticize people for not reading a tiny warning, but do you realize that your flaming and brown nosing has been repeated for the last 5 pages? hypocrites.

The errors are corrected, guides on how to remove the sponsorship package has been posted. The last thing this thread needs is more flaming and worship of Patchou; the god of Messenger Plus! nerds.

The guide on how to remove the sponsorship package can be found here: http://msgplus.mybboard.com/showthread.php?tid=21598

Now, let this thread die if you don't have anything constructive to add and troll somewhere else, please.

Bloody good point, I forgot about that, so those with the problem of the 'sponsor' being installed must be in actual fact ticking options without reading waht they are, which makes it even crazier to suggest that the program/programmer is at fault :(

lol, it would seem to me that the ones with blind faith were the very same people who clicked "Yes", "Yes!", "Yes", "Enlarge Penis Now!" while installing programs without reading...

the Autoupdate didn't prompt an agreement.

The autoupdate downloads the exact same exe file and runs it. It's the same installer. It shows the exact same agreement. There's no way it can work different just for you.

In general, I agree with that kind if thought... but maybe you forgot too quickly how you and your friends insulted me in the first page of this thread.... that, added to the fact that you were wrong, can at least give other people the benefit of bitching back a little don't you think? :p. This thread is now permanently on Neowin, anyone searching for msgplus will read the first ten insults and won't install my software as a result. I'm not sure you would act so cool if it was you everybody else were talking about.

In fact, may I add that Neowin is supposed to have a 0 tolerance policy for hateful posts? If one of you knows what admin to contact, I'm sure he would be pleased to send 9/10th of this thread to the recycle bin .

No, it hasnt caused any problems for me at all, and I personally think its wonderful software, but I object strongly to signing up to an internet forum just because you do not like what they say about your software

Its a 'you can have any opinion as long as its a good one' mentality

Okay, i'll shut up now if you think i'm trying stoke a fire

but at least dont put more than 200 spywares

because of those i stopped using it and will never use it again like most people

and you CANT unistall that toolbar in 5 second

lavasoft's ad-aware and spybot cant unistall most of them

and all those bookmarks it adds are just plain stupid and dumb...

just start a donation strategy rather than a spyware based software, you will bring a lot of people(myself included)

to go using your software and maybe yuo will make more money

I think badmouthing a piece of software (unfairly I might add) is more than enough for the software maker to register on a forum and defend it.

I know I would, because the guy who created this thread must have an IQ of a snail.
