syphern
New Processor Changes Instructions On-the-fly Stretch Inc announced on Monday of their S5000 chip which is the first processor that can add new instruction while operating. The chip combines an existing RISC (reduced instruction set computing) architecture with a large reconfigurable area of programmable logic called the Instruction Set Extension Fabric, ISEF. Stretch's own C/C++ compiler automatically spots areas in a program that require intensive computation and creates new instructions for the processor to handle those tasks on-the-fly. During a demo of the new chips performance, the chip was ran at 300Mhz but outperformed 2Ghz competitor chips. Banta said it takes far less time and money to develop products using the S5000 and major changes can be implemented via a software update. source w2s
Redestium
Cool, but we'll probably never see it.
Robbie Khan Reviews Posted April 26, 2004 Reviews Share Posted April 26, 2004 300MHz > 2Ghz, AMAZING if it is Athlon/P4 class but celeron/duron class? not as amazing but still amazing :p
BroChaos Veteran Posted April 26, 2004 Veteran Share Posted April 26, 2004 so is this only good for compiling stuff? or does it have practical uses?
Fred Derf Veteran Posted April 26, 2004 Veteran Share Posted April 26, 2004 Let me guess, the 2GHz CPU that it outperformed was a Celeron...
boomn
This type of technology could help combat the heat issues due to rising clock speeds. Cooling would obviously be easier if newer chips ran at half of current speeds or less
