iMacs running Windows XP under Virtual PC are absurdly slow, unless you are just doing office software tasks. I am told that even on a G5, Virtual PC is no great shakes, speed wise.

I don't know if this has been replied to, and i don't have the time to read through 6 pages of replies to find out...

The latest version of Virtual PC was created before the G5 came out and doesn't take advantage of the new hardware. In fact, I think it might run slower on a G5, but I'm not certain. Another main reason VPC runs slow when doing anything other than basic tasks has to do a lot with the video cards emulated in VPC. The current version emulates some crappy 4 or 8 meg card. I'm pretty sure the upcoming version from Microsoft will take advantage of the G5 to emulate video better and speed things up quite a bit overall.

**EDIT**

Actually, VPC7 is already out :)

Made it to step 4 of Emon's guide.

Step 4: Now we are going to make a Hard Drive image where we will install OS 10.3. To do that run PPC_CFE.exe from C:\PearPC folder, click on File menu and choose Make Hard Drive Image..

I receive a nasty error, The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000135). Click OK to terminate. Rebooting or cleanign out the temp files doesn't seem to do the trick.

-WinXP w/ SP2 slipstreamed.

-Firewall disabled

-Nothing running at startup

After installing .NET framework 1.1 and then running the .NET sp1 update, I was able to launch it just fine. Don't know if you wanted to add that to your guide or not :)

I'm also at the same point as Inplode. Nothing happens after clicking Start except the editor minimizing to my system tray. Even waited 20 minutes :(

Replace everything in that config file with this:

pci_ide0_master_installed = 1
pci_ide0_master_image = "hd_image.img"
pci_ide0_master_type = "hd"
memory_size = 0x20000000 ??? Set to 512MB Ram
ppc_start_resolution = "1280x1024x32"
redraw_interval_msec = 10
prom_driver_graphic = "video.x"
cpu_pvr = 0x00088302 ??? Remove this line if something goes wrong
key_toggle_mouse_grab = "F12"
key_toggle_full_screen = "Alt+Return"
pci_rtl8139_installed = 1
pci_rtl8139_mac = "de:ad:ca:fe:12:35"
pci_3c90x_installed = 0
pci_3c90x_mac = "de:ad:ca:fe:12:34"
pci_usb_installed = 1
prom_bootmethod = "select"
prom_env_bootargs = ""
prom_env_machargs = ""
nvram_file = "nvram"
pci_ide0_slave_installed = 1
pci_ide0_slave_image = "OSX_CD1.iso" ??? Whatever you named it.ISO
pci_ide0_slave_type = "cdrom"

Looks like this:

hey .. sorry guys .. I didn't check this thread for awhile ... I am amazed some people are actually using my program :D

@Callaway .. thanks .. I will add that info to the guide ( I thought everyone has .Net FrameWork 1.1 by now ..guess I was wrong :) )

and to everyone who are having problem starting up PearPC .. my program does nothing but calls pearpc.exe with the config file as the argument. So check your config file .. check if you have named your HD image right or not

That file is well documented .. if you guys are still confused about some parts of the file ..let me know.

i am having a problem and have been surfing the net looking on this....

i am using the mac osx disc that came with my sis's ibook (i dunno if it is the right disk or if i can use it, it says "mac osx install" on it...

[iO/IDE] <Error> invalid format <filesize isn't a multiple of 516096>

this only happens when i activate the cd.... (in the config file)

please help :(

Someone please help, i've gotten this to work before, but I can't figure out what I did differently before to get it to work for the life of me.. and nothing happens when i click start pearpc...with the file emon made..

here's my config and screen shot..

## PearPC Configuration File

##

## Start Resolution

##

## (clients that use video.x can change the resolution at runtime,

##  so this would be used only for starting up)

##

## format:  "(width)x(height)x(depth)"

##    or  "(width)x(height)x(depth)@(frequency)"

##

## depth can only be 15 or 32

##

## default: "800x600x15"

##

ppc_start_resolution = "800x600x15"

##

## Redraw interval (in ms)

## must be between 10 and 500

##

## If you set this higher, PearPC will spend less time doing redraws (and so run faster)

## but feel less responsive. You should adjust this to your computer speed and personal

## preference.

##

redraw_interval_msec = 100

##

## Key codes

##

key_toggle_mouse_grab = "F12"

key_toggle_full_screen = "Alt+Return"

##

## Loader

##

##

## Boot method

##  this can be

##  1. "auto", prom will boot the first bootable partition found (default)

##  2. "select", prom will show you a list of bootable partitions

##  3. "force", prom will load and boot the local file prom_loadfile

##

prom_bootmethod = "auto"

## Example of how to use "force":

#prom_bootmethod = "force"

#prom_loadfile = "test/yaboot"

#prom_env_bootpath = "disk"

##

## bootargs: don't change unless you know what you are doing

## machargs: set to "-v" to get a verbose startup

##

#prom_env_bootargs = ""

prom_env_machargs = ""

##

## This is needed if you want to boot Mac OS X

##

prom_driver_graphic = "video.x"

## This will adjust the position of the initial page table (don't change)

#page_table_pa = 104857600

##

## CPU Config

##

## Processor Version Register

## Defaults to 0x00088302

## Only change if you know want you are doing

## Altivec: G4 = 0x000c0000, G5 = 0x00390202 [ Do not use these values. They are not supported yet ]#cpu_pvr = 0x000c0000

pci_ide0_slave_installed = 1

# pci_ide0_slave_image = "C:\pearpc\panther.iso"
pci_ide0_slave_image = "C:\pearpc\pantherimage.img"
# pci_ide0_slave_image = "F:\"

# pci_ide0_slave_type = "cdrom"
pci_ide0_slave_type = "hd"
# pci_ide0_slave_type = "nativecdrom"

See ..you are using an .img file as a slave image. Thats should be an image file of your OS X CD. SO it has to be an .iso file. Also the type of the image has to be "cdrom" ...

unless .. you wanted to have a second hard drive.
