My first vector

Question

After seeing this thread https://www.neowin.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=170209 I decided it was time I had a go at vectors, so I followed the tutorial provided in the thread by Heathrowe (cheers mate, IMO (albeit as a humble noob) an excellent intro to vectors (Y) )

This is the site http://www.heathrowe.com/tuts/vector.asp

and heres my attempt at following the tutorial, comments please (although as a first attempt I have to say I'm pleased with it)

hey cool stuff, something odd about the bottom section of the car, but you made it look better than the tutorial shows :p

Cheers mate, I know what you mean about the underside, but that bit was the first layer and probably shows my noob-ness :D

Wave,May 27 2004, 20:51]Not bad at all for your first vector.  Here's a shot of my first ever vector.  As you can see...you have to start somewhere :p

Again thanks, that's a cool first attempt, how did you come up with the subject? It looks like a difficult one to start with.

cool, but is the door supposed to have hinges on both sides, adjust the handle a bit. BTW, if you do resize that car, its is jaggy, so how are you supposed to resize it?? Anybody know?

Not sure what you mean about the hinges, did you look at the original picture in the tutorial? That's where they're supposed to be. Same goes for the handle

edit: :p I see what you mean now, it does look a little as if the handles' another hinge, optical dillusion I guess, same place as the original one though

As for resizing, do you mean resizing the jpg I posted from the original psd file? If so, that will be jagged, but resizing the whole vector using Select > All, then Image Resize... works fine as you can see from this resized (1200x753) one...

Nope, you've lost me now, the whole point of vectors is that you can resize without the constraint of resolution. I don't see any jaggedness in the 1280 image, not like resizing the original jpg image above would produce. That's what I was saying about selecting all the layers of my psd file (all the vectors) you don't have to redraw them bigger, they can be resized without becoming jagged.

The only way to resize a vector without losing quality is to make a true vector image using Adobe Illustrator or Macromedia Fireworks. These images created in Photoshop are vector style, but aren't true vectors.

So if you want an image that you can resize as much as you want, fire up Illustrator or Fireworks. :)

hoot hoot - beers' my way

sweet - glad to see its being made to good use.

primarily getting to grips with the readily available vector shapes and the pen tool.

course, applying the pen to any image can produce the same crisp results.

and getting past the intimidation of them.

good job :)

pay attention closer to the edges of lines, they are quite a bit more jaggy than the original, the only way to resize vectors is to resize the paths

but since there are so many it would be just as easy making them over again.

Note the (new) "Click to enlarge" link... that picture is too big to display normally, so it gets resized very simply by sqaushing the pc by the browser, clikc the link and no more jaggedy!

Nice vector! :D

i think youre talking about resizing shapes. the shapes are resizeable and they keep their color, but paths are more powerful..however more manuality is needed with them

I think I'm going to give up with the discussion because I have no idea what you're talking about. All I know is that if I resize all the layers within my PSD, the paths get resized accordingly and are still editable afterwards, no need to redraw them manually. Maybe we have our wires crossed (remember I am new to this) but carrying on down this path (pardon the pun) seems pointless.
