markwolfe Veteran Posted June 2, 2004 Veteran Share Posted June 2, 2004 You havent touched Longhorn 4074 have you? Why? Does LH 4074 include Office?
icecaveman
btw since when does windows come with nvidia drivers? I mentioned nVIDIA drivers because you run the setup, click next next next and your done. Install any modern soundcard? Plug in the CD, autoplay will come up and there you can click install and get all the drivers plus some software, TV Tuner? Press install on the autorun... You are promted to upgrade when you install Windows and so is with most Linux distros but then you can turn on automatic updates in windows. If you got SP1 you can install Autopatcher with no problems can't see how that's more difficult than Linux.
nmeu
win xp comes with lame-o framebuffer drivers for nvidia cards... they don't handle acceleration of 3d or even 2d. most newer linux distros come with these same type of 'lame-o' drivers for nvidia cards.... something to do with nvidia not giving it up... yeah...
area91
Why? Does LH 4074 include Office? Microsoft cant include Office, beacuse if they did the DOJ would go after them after all the open source people, apple, and java would complain. You cant make that argument. But I think that the point that everyone here (with the possible exception of CaKeY ;) ) agrees that it is easier in Windows. Right now, it is a Windows world, and OEMs would be STUPID to not include Windows drivers, and ensure that it is easy to use them.

If the discussion is making the statement that it is easier to get Windows to a fully operational state, as it was in the beginning, then it is completely relevant. There are several one-CD distros that install a complete desktop, including office programs. It is not always necessarily easier in Windows to get feature-rich desktop. CaKeY
CaKeY,You cannot think that installing nVidia in Linux is easier than in Windows. No I dont. My point was that the drivers included with windows are not REAL nvidia drivers. Whats the first thing you do after installing windows? Run live update of course, then go download a bunch of drivers. icecaveman
I like the way you talk markjensen, at least in this thread you did not continue on insisting Linux is easier for everything like most Linux users I know do. People are tired of Linux fanatics hyping up everything and people (including myself) have stopped listening to them because of constant disappointments with Linux. But you markjensen are the kind of Linux user other should take an example of as only with truth and no lies you successfully convert users to Linux. icecaveman
BTW if you are not a hardcore gamer and don't need the newest versions of the drivers then windows update installs nVIDIA drivers on your system for you.

Windows XP comes with full 3D accelerationed drives. The main thing they are missing is the NVControl Panel.
markwolfe Veteran Posted June 2, 2004 Veteran Share Posted June 2, 2004 :) Thanks for the compliment. I think most of the fanatics are dual-booters, and feel they have to hate Microsoft (which I don't - I am not a fan of their business practices, but they do have good products). This hatred just means that they now have a bit of self-loathing. I think they deal with it by being irrational. The next few years of Linux and Longhorn development will be very interesting.

nuka_t
Adding photo editor, etc. is MUCH more. dont want to go too far off topic here, but the included photo editor in longhorn is quite feature packed. MS needs to catch up with apple in the digital media department and their effort shows. can someone answere my original question though, can i install mandrake on VPC? Edit: doh, nm, i reread your post.

b3ta
Hi! I'm back :D Well that was an interesting journey, just at the moment I'm back on Windows. :/ Seems my Lucent Winmodem wasn't supported out of the box in either Mandrake 10 nor Fedora Core 2. :ermm: I will try again tomorrow, but I have to get a driver that will make my modem work and learn how to install it. markwolfe Veteran Posted June 2, 2004 Veteran Share Posted June 2, 2004 ,Jun 1 2004, 23:14] Seems my Lucent Winmodem wasn't supported out of the box in either Mandrake 10 nor Fedora Core 2. :ermm:I will try again tomorrow, but I have to get a driver that will make my modem work and learn how to install it. I wish you luck on this... Microsoft has gotten modem manufacturers to reduce their costs be eliminating certain hardware/firmware that makes "Winmodems" a true modem. Unfortunately, this means that extra work may be required, depending on your winmodem chipset. See http://linmodems.org And, it is possible that there is no Open Source driver for your chipset. The site I listed should help you determine chipset and compatibility.
forster
,Jun 2 2004, 01:58] Just minutes away from installing Mandrake 10.0 Release on my PC.Keep your fingers crossed, I'm taking the plunge. Cool - Linux shouldnt be seen as such a bad thing anymore, it is getting more and more usuable by grannies and grandads with every release :)
