XP Messenger Oddities

Question

This is screwy, I just want that messenger to GO AWAY (not un-installed just not in memory every time I sign on). So I go into tools and de-select "Run when windows loads", and then I close it from the systray and it goes away. But then when I log in again it LOADS. So I'm like WTF? I go into tools again to make sure check box is still checked. I also check out start-up menu and nope, no messenger. But every time I log on it still starts up, anyone have any ideas?

Strange.. I make it not to load when windows starts too, I've no problem with it. Looks like something is keeping it from saving the settings before you reboot/shutdown. Try manually edit the registry, see the attachment, compare your to my. I've make a red circle on the key that I suspect would be the one that determine wheter or not to load Messenger when Windows start, I'm not totally sure about this, so before you make any chages to your registry, make a backup :)

Ahhh I see what's happening. Whenever I run outlook express it opens messenger. What a wierd thing to do. I had to go into options in messenger and uncheck the box that says "log on to messenger", but then it still opens it until I uncheck "let messenger run in background"
