Callaway
lmao. can't wait to see this on ESPN. LA Times link As an investment banker who works with entertainment companies, Mike Mahan knows he could get a better return on his $25,000 than just buying up the right-field pavilion at Dodger Stadium and having a party. But there's a catch. Or so he hopes. Mahan, a 28-year-old Newbury Park native who now lives in West Los Angeles, has put down that amount of money through the Dodgers' group-sales department to secure all 3,000 seats in that specific section for two of the last three games of the regular season -- not coincidentally against the San Francisco Giants. The Oct. 1 game is team photo day. The Oct. 3 game is fan appreciation day, the last game of the regular season. For those plotting history, either of those could be the game when Barry Bonds slugs his 700th, 714th or 715th career home run -- each a milestone number in his quest to become the game's all-time leader. Bonds, whose 19 homers through the Giants' first 76 games this year put him at 676 for his career, is 24 short of 700 with 86 games left. "Obviously there are no guarantees, but I have crunched the numbers," said Mahan, a lifelong Dodgers fan who says Kirk Gibson's 1988 World Series home run was the best day of his life. "I look at this as buying a lottery ticket and having some fun." The Dodgers could look at it as a potential public-relations problem, but they agree the purchase, which included a standard discount for a group buy, was all done above board. There are a couple of conditions for Mahan, however: He can't scalp (that is, resell for more than the $6 face value on stadium grounds) the tickets he doesn't use. And to avoid losing parking and concession income, the Dodgers have told him the section needs to be 80 percent full by game time or they will allow people to go in for free to fill the unused seats. (Please, don't make us bring up the time in 1996 when actor Charlie Sheen spent $6,500 for all 2,615 seats behind the left-field fence at Anaheim Stadium so he could catch a home run ball. He left empty-handed. Who looked worse, Sheen or the Angels?) "We often sell both pavilions out to groups such as Little Leagues or churches, so that's not really unusual," said Gary Miereanu, the team's vice president of communications, noting that another organization has bought up the right-field seats for the Oct. 2 game. "We don't investigate the motivation of why one person would buy the section, but we don't want to have a completely empty pavilion out there on two big giveaway days." Mahan is fine with that stipulation. His plan is to round up about 500 family and friends for each game, plant them strategically in groups of two or three throughout the pavilion and have them sign an agreement -- if they catch a Bonds' milestone home run ball, they split the proceeds with him. He'll then try to sell off the other tickets to whomever wants them -- go ahead and call his office at (310) 479-4250. "I anticipate every ticket I have will be used," said Mahan, who plans to attend the upcoming Giants-Dodgers series but will be sitting in box seats. "At the very least, we'll see a good game that means something in the playoff chase." But not everyone can just ask him for a ticket, of course, in hopes of catching a ball that could fetch maybe a half-million dollars. "My mom wanted one, but I don't want to put her in the middle of a potential mob scene," said Mahan. "If she goes, I may send her down to get some food when Bonds comes up." Or she could always grab a glove and wait in the parking lot behind the pavilion. No charge for that. Tom Hoffarth can be reached at thomas.hoffarth@dailynews.com and (818) 713-3661. IlliniPi
I saw this on the news earlier today. I know this isn't going to happen, but it'd be funny to just see him sitting by himself with 2,999 empty seats around him. Edit: I also thought it'd be funny if Bonds hit it opposite field or to center. :D Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/184279-fan-buys-entire-giants-right-field-for-two-games/#findComment-2385806 Share on other sites

CatnipOligarchy
Just another reason why baseball sucks, they need to get rid of "walks" to make the game a little more exciting. ha, its not quite that simple though.. walks have been around as long as the game has.. at one point (late 1800s, early 1900s) it took 8 balls to walk.. walks are a part of the game.. intentional walks have gotten out of hand with Bonds, but even if you made those illegal, pitchers would just pitch around the guys, an intentional unintentional walk, of sorts.. or, maybe Barry Bonds should just retire. and all our problems would be solved. -=SD=-
lol yeah, I suppose it wouldn't be easy to stop.. just don't like watching someone go to bat and the catcher and pitcher just play a game of catch by themselves (especially doesn't help when it's a pirates game :p) And maybe he should :D Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/184279-fan-buys-entire-giants-right-field-for-two-games/#findComment-2387441 Share on other sites

EmuZombie Veteran Posted June 30, 2004 Veteran Share Posted June 30, 2004 Yeah, CatnipOligarthy has a great point, if they were for some reason to change the rules to make intentional walks illegal or restrict how many times you can, they will disguise the intentional walk as unintentional. Just like unintentional intentional bean balls when the umpire has warned both clubs. Very hard to tell sometimes, and a lot of the times the Red Sox have gotten away with it (I think) (not a fair example, but it's closest I can think of) Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/184279-fan-buys-entire-giants-right-field-for-two-games/#findComment-2387926 Share on other sites

Ayepecks
What the person above said. Bonds said that he was going to make people forget about Babe Ruth... talk about an egomaniac! And once Bonds ****es in a cup and gets it tested I'll believe he didn't take steroids. And, no, he will not be known as the best of all time. I think Ruth or Aaron will still claim that.
