mentalindustries
so the question on everyones mind well mine at least, is it worthwhile upgrading to the new graphics cards or wait. if so how long will the wait be? 6 months a year:S and for example the GF 6800 ultras somethign of that quality goign to be released on PCIe and if so how much will it cost. excluding the fact u got to reaplce ur mobo, RAM and HDD. mental industries Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/184435-pci-express/page/2/#findComment-584288591 Share on other sites

ortonius
An author from a column on Tom's Hardware feels differently. It may be more flexible, but the term "faster" is used loosely. "3D games aren't designed to utilize the greater transfer rates yet, and even if they did, the question remains how much of an impact the greater bandwidth of PCI Express will really have. Sure, more and more calculations are being offloaded from the CPU to the graphics processor, but the CPU and memory would still need to (be able to) generate 4GB per second of data first and then transfer it via the bus. The same holds true for video upstreams - the system memory will be hard-pressed to keep up..........The outcome, in many ways, is as unpredictable as the weather. PCI Express has a lot of potential, and not just because of its higher bandwidth. Bandwidth is no argument today - as our comparison between APG 4x and 8x prove. Whether graphics cards will benefit from this and how attractive PCI Express is for graphics usage largely depends on the motherboard and software developers. Updating only for the sake of higher bus bandwidth won't be incentive enough in most cases. What's needed are things like multi-slot solutions etc...think SLI! http://graphics.tomshardware.com/graphic/20040310/index.html Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/184435-pci-express/page/2/#findComment-584408840 Share on other sites
TechDave
According to this review of the X800 AGP and PCI Express versions, theres little difference. col_sandurz
enzo said: I was suprised that the Grantsdale chipset mobos came out as ATX form factor, thinking PCIe and BTX would be released at the same time. Where's BTX? I've been wondering about this too. Does anyone have any idea about when BTX motherboards will ship/be availible? Yes there are several versions of PCI-E I cant explain because im not informed enough on the different versions. PCI-E and PCI-X are NOT the same thing thats the only thing i can say. Can someone who does know about the different versions explain? I myself would also like to be informed :) Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/184435-pci-express/page/2/#findComment-584501761 Share on other sites
