Hi everyone,

I am doing a graduate (college) research project, and one of the things I need to collect information on is how do you define computer science? Please if you could post a definition of your own (not looked up, must be self worded) opinnion of what Computer Science is.

Here is an example:

  Quote
Computer science is the science of computers and the processes and interactions required between computers (hardware and software) and humans to create an interactive and meaningful applications and systems that can be used to perform important and complex tasks.

Thanks!

(I posted this in general discussion and somehow it got moved to "A Collection of essential guides"?)

Learning about how computers work including hardware and software, as opposed to just using them.

I disagree with PCKing: I've been doing comp sci for over a year and have prected A's, with a B- in GCSE maths and no A-Level maths. Only problem is getting a course at Uni. :p

Are you sure you just didn't click in the wrong forum before posting or something..because the interface for both is the same...but *shrugs* k....my definition...is Computer science is based mostly on software with some aspects on how it works with hardware...but most of it is software.

Computer science

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.

In its most general sense, computer science (CS or compsci) is the study of computation and information processing, both in hardware and in software. In practice, computer science includes a variety of topics relating to computers, which range from the abstract analysis of algorithms, formal grammars, etc. to more concrete subjects like programming languages, software, and computer hardware. As a scientific discipline, it differs significantly from mathematics, programming, software engineering, and computer engineering, although these fields are often confused.

"Computer science is no more about computers than astronomy is about telescopes."

        - attributed to Edsger Dijkstra

"Computer science is not as old as physics; it lags by a couple of hundred years. However, this does not mean that there is significantly less on the computer scientist's plate than on the physicist's: younger it may be, but it has had a far more intense upbringing!"

        - Richard Feynman
