Microsoft pulls XP Service Pack at last moment

No date given for release

By INQUIRER staff: Thursday 05 August 2004, 07:08

SERVICE PACK two for Windows XP was supposed to be released to manufacturing yesterday but Microsoft pulled it at the last moment, without giving a reason for the move.

So far, it hasn't given another date for the release, designed to provide rather more security than previous versions of Windows.

The only thing Microsoft said was that it needed to make sure that Service Pack Two met quality standards.

However, you can only polish a piece of software so much. By introducing additional features and fixing previous bugs, software developers always stand the risk of creating fresh bugs and opening up more holes.

That's particularly true for large pieces of software cobbled together over years and worked on by large numbers of developers. Quality control in such cases is practically impossible. However good XP SP2 is, there are bound to be further fixes needed in the future and other problems introduced.

Microsoft made the decision to concentrate on filling in holes in its premier operating system last year, and that has meant that other projects - future operating systems such as "Longhorn" and a 64-bit version of Windows XP - are also suffering delays.

You know, if that is the case and it has been delayed AGAIN, I wish ALL of Microsofts systems/servers would crash and ALL data erased. Then I would get to see the company crumble and fade into history. Microsoft needs to understand that they can NEVER make everything perfect. That is how life is. All this excess delays is rediculous.

Windows XP update delayed again

Microsoft has again delayed a long-awaited update to Windows XP, citing quality concerns.

The company had planned to wrap up development this week on Windows XP Service Pack 2, but a Microsoft representative said late Wednesday that the software giant had decided that more work was needed on the update before if could be released to manufacturing.

Microsoft has been forced to push back the update's release on several occasions, most recently moving the release date from July to August. Windows XP Service Pack 2, or SP2, was originally set for release in June. However, Microsoft still expects to release the update this month, the representative said.

SP2 will contain a number of new features, most of which deal with security. One new feature, for example, is a Security Center that provides a view of a PC's key protection settings. An improved firewall and other tweaks are also planned.

Among the challenges Microsoft faces is maintaining compatibility with existing software while boosting the reliability of the core operating system.

Earlier this week, Microsoft issued a warning that the newest version of its software for managing customer relations will not work with SP2. Customers using Microsoft Business Solutions CRM Sales for Outlook 1.2 will encounter problems with the software if they install the forthcoming Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) update, the company said.

Microsoft has posted a patch to its Web site that it says fixes the problem.

To hell with Microsoft, they get everyone all hyped up about SP2 like it's God sent or something and then they delay it again citing quality concerns. Yet, everyone with half a brain knows that SP2 will still have holes when it get MS stamp of approval.

Well I can understand why they want it to be absolutely perfect before releasing it. After all, this will be the last service pack ever released for Windows XP, and it's not like they can release patches, or hot-fixes as they might be called, for any problems that come up with SP2. If it is not totally flawless they company would probably go out of business within days of it's release. Better to be safe than sorry.

Sarcasm aside, this sucks.
