Hi guys, I am just wondering if WindowsXP-KB835935-SP2-ENU.exe is the final release of SP2? Is that the exact same thing that is going to show up on Windows Update pretty soon?

This is what it says in the About window after I installed the above file:

Microsoft Windows

Version 5.1 (Build 2600.xpsp_sp2_rtm.040803-2158 : Service Pack 2)

I am confused what the _rtm.040803 means...

That is part of the program, its an error. Raptor needs to do an update to list the final SP2 correctly but he is on vacation and it will not be done till he gets back.

There is no "time-stamp" in the file name!

That is the one I downloaded directly from the Microsoft website as the Network Installation. MD5 hash matches those in release: 59a98f181fe383907e520a391d75b5a7

This is NOT the GOLD SP2 it is the RTM trust me there will be a new instlation package in the future that does not include the RTM tag in the about windows

nothing about the service pack itself will change, however the GOLD release will not put sp2_rtm in the about windows

GOLD= final updates + final official install package wich will not come untill all MS pages move to directing to SP2 and the Windows Update Cd with SP2 is being sold

they did this with SP1 but it wasnt as highly scrutinized as SP2 so many people didnt notice

i have both RTM SP1 and Gold SP1 they are different belive me, however the files they install are completely 100% identical right down to the digital signatres of each individual file.

the only difference is the installer packag iself and that GOLD will not add the sp1_rtm or for sp2 sp2_rtm

i know it for fact as i have said i have both the RTM SP1 and GOLD SP1

Gold is a term that MANY software companies tag the final base version of software

since MS uses SP's as there Base versions there is a GOLD XP wich was the origianl build put on Cd's back in 2001

then there was a GOLD XP SP1 set of CD's wich was sent to OEM Resellers and Manufacturers that they used as the base for the Cd's with SP1 they included when you bought a new computer from them, some of them added drivers specific to thier swystems some didnt

there WILL be a Gold XP SP2 CD wich includes the final isntaller also beside the final builds of the files it installs.

if the RTM installer of SP1 didnt get a final installer package why doesnt every computer running XP SP1 (not sp1a) without a single update after SP1 say RTM in the about?

its because MS only had the RTM SP1 available for 2 days before the final installer was released and they removed it from the downlaod links and replaced it with the GOLD SP1

I guess those are the perks of being a mod. Still, most of the mods here seem a lot nicer than on other sites I've been too. I suppose you could report it to NeoBond if you felt someone was out of line big-time...

For me, I think it is bad when ANYBODY flames, mods or regular users. There should not be a need for it most of the time. But I guess we all lose our tempers now and then.

I was Never Trying to say that this File on MS Technet was a false File

I was never trying to say that it didnt install version 2180 "final" files

i was only stateing that there will be in the near future another SP2 Full Network Instaler package that will not included the RTM in the windows version about box

i was trying to save some dial-upers a huge amount of time because if they wait the real Official "Final/GOLD" SP2 will be available.

and for those that dont understand why the RTM tag is in the version windows.

i was attempting to clear the confusion from personal factual experience and i get flammed BY THE STAFF no less

Show me the part that identifies this as Technet. If it's not on what you think is the main Windows page, it's because MS hasn't linked to it yet. SP1's page looked the same as this one does, IIRC, at least before 1a.

Do you think that the Express install and the Network install are not the same Service Pack? Why insist that there will be another version in the near future? Better yet, help us all out and prove it with some backup.

'RTM' - Short for release to manufacturing. The version of a software product that is given to manufacturers to bundle into future versions of their hardware products. RTM versions are typically released to manufacturers before they are released to the general public so that the manufacturers can work out any bugs the software may encounter with hardware devices. The release of an RTM version does not necessarily mean that the creators have worked out all the problems with the software; there still may be more versions of the product before it is released to the general public.

I specifically made the last two sentences bold, because it clearly defines that 'RTM' does NOT mean final in terms of what a customer will see. 'RTM', if you can't understand the above definition, simply means that the product is usually stable enough to release it to a manufacture to allow them time to start producing enough products to prepare for the mass public.

HOWEVER, a 'GOLD' version is what the customer will buy from a shelf or get in a pressed CD. This is evident because the CDs for SP2 have not shipped.... why? Because they are cleaning the 'RTM' version to make it suitable for a customer base... which is then referred to as 'GOLD'.

God Damn mods... Maybe you should think before you react...
