Yeah, thought that's what you were referring to... I won't touch on that.

you guys are missing the point. yes, you're right when you say it's just a physical trait (again, assuming if it is true which i dont know for sure). but i think the problem is with the fact that this physical trait of this ethnicity was linked to a negative characteristic (driving badly) and therefore it can be insulting to the chinise.

for example, dogs are hairy. i state that dogs are hairy and that is just a fact and not offensive or anything. but if i say that dogs are smelly because they're hairy, well then that is offensive to dogs. not the fact that they're hairy, but the fact that i'm saying they're smelly. (dogs probably enjoy being smelly than anything else, but i hope you get my point.... )

As I said: should the person have said it? No, probably not. But does that make the person racist (what this very topic was started about)? No. It could very likely be a statistical fact, too, I honestly don't know. People are getting too bent out of shape over racism that isn't racism at all these days... seriously. There's a time when it's racist, and there's a time when it's just fact.

How exactly is it an insult if it's a fact (which, as I've said, I don't know if it is or isn't)? It didn't exactly insult me when Dusty Baker said white people aren't as adapt to the sun as black people -- though there's still an argument going on about whether he's right or wrong. Fact of the matter is, I don't care. Neither should you.

That's just my opinion, though.

Erm... if you're referring to a previous post, I would wouldn't dismiss it.

I was referring to jacob_'s inflammatory comment. As much as we would all like to whack him with a baseball bat in real life, we can't; we're online, and he's an anonymous child. What else is there to do besides dismissing it?

Edit:

lol i didnt post that?

Don't deny it.

first of all, i'm not getting all bent out of shape. i have my own personal feelings about various ethnic groups (including chinese) that i am choosing not to express here.

secondly, you're still ignoring my point. i specifically said that when whoever it was said they have flat feet isn't racist (assuming it's true, still). it's the fact that it is linked directly with something negative. your comparison with the sun and the color of people's skin isn't really equivalent to this situation. people dont really strive to be "adapt to the sun". there's no international sport of laying out in the sun and seeing who doesnt get a sunburn.

i guess its kinda like saying all black people eat fried chiken. there could very well be chinese people that arent flat-footed as well as black vegetarians

<<snipped>> Totally uncalled for. --BOOG

Um, I don't know if it's true or not, but it may be. You make find it offensive, but there's a lot of natural advantages or disadvantages that differnet races have over one another. Of course we're all people, though, if that's what you mean -- group hug?

Sorry... just had to.

What's with you and all the racist comments, though? Are you on some sort of goal to prove that the world is racist?

But, the bottom line is was it the right thing to say -- probably not. It doesn't matter if it's true or not, you're going to get slammed by some ethnic group no matter what you say.

what are you going on. so if i said something like All Black people arent white (except MJ) would that make me racist. Its true its not derogatory. I fail to see the problem with pointing out a problem that it common among a race.

What if people want to get tan? I think this argument is as trivial as some white person from the mainland saying they can't tan as well as me because that person is white and I'm part Hawaiian.

Here's another example - in my engineering class today, there was someone who originated from Africa - very dark skin. When we went through our ice-breakers at the beginning of class, we spoke about interests, in which mine and another person's was surfing. The African person made comments about how he can't tay out in the sun too long because of his very dark skin, and that it absorbs heat and whatnot, but he likes going to the beach.

His dark skin is a physical trait of his ethnicity that prevents him from staying out too long at the beach, but it's not a big deal. It's just the way things are. It's a negative link to people of his ethnicity who would want to surf or whatever, but hey, he didn't cry about it. He joked about it. See? Not a big deal.

Hawaiian people have big noses! :woot: Oh no!

I'm not saying you, just people in general. If I was directing it at you I wouldn't be afraid to say your name, trust me :)

And, I'm not ignoring your point... you're ignoring mine: the whole post/topic was about how it was a racist statement. You see it as negative, so be it. I don't see it as negative, and I'm sure a lot of people don't, either. But, if you want to find it as a negative attribute, that's your opinion, not mine.

Um, you missed the entire point there. Being adapt to the sun improves endurance. Look it up. Oh, and I'm pretty sure there's no Olympic event involving just bare feet  Your comparison is asinine, to put it bluntly. You say that there's nothing about sunburning, yet you go on to say that the soles of your feet are basically the only important thing in the diving. I'm sorry, but I have to call BS there, buddy. You can't make a comparison like that -- it's just asinine. It's like comparing the stem of an apple to an entire tree.

Um, I think you completely missed the point of all my posts. I'm pretty much stating what you're stating... I'm guessing you misread it.

what do you think i see as negative? i DO NOT see having flat feet as negative, and i have never said that. i DID say that i see diving badly was a negative thing. are you saying you like to dive badly? i dunno, but i would like to dive well rather than suck at it.

and dont put words in my mouth please, i can do it just fine. i never said anything even close to "that the soles of your feet are basically the only important thing in the diving" (as you claim I said at some point)....why would i say that? that's stupid. the reason i'm only talking about feet is because that's what this whole topic was about from the beginning. are you saying i should just randomly say something like "well, chinese have short legs and that makes their diving suck"? what the hell, i'm getting flamed for staying on topic

i still say that being adapt to the sun isnt generally considered as important as diving well, especially when it comes to the context of the summer olympic games, which this quote was relating to.
