Microsoft Download Centre Demanig OS Validation

Wow...so some programer TOTALLY just wasted their time :(

I thought there was some court agreement back in the day that said MS couldn't collect any information from the computers connecting to their update servers? Regardless of the fact that the serial is issued from them, I wouldn't think that they would be able to just check everybody's

:woot:

Yey me! My first frontpage news posting :D

& 2 in the software section :D

I think that this has to be a test bed. Any legal agreements to not collect personal information from WU are unlikly to apply as this is ms.com. Also I'm pretty sure under US / UK law the copyright holder is entitled to enforce it. So why wouldn't Microsoft be allowed to check for pirated copies of it's own software?

Let's assume that this isn't taking personal info for a minute.

They can still get a good grasp of which keys are being prolifically exploited by warezers and have them locked down - giving people a nasty surprise in XP SP3.

Speculation of course.

The fact that this is appearing in Linux though... nice oversight there.
