Samoa
so basically, it's verify your windows and download or don't verify and download.... Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/218765-microsoft-download-centre-demanig-os-validation/page/2/#findComment-584575777 Share on other sites
DrScouse
Ive just ran WU and not noticed anything about a validation check... there are no critical updates, only 2 optional updates for me... I have a Corp SP2 slipstreamed with a generated 640 PID... ??? Electronic Punk
DrScouse: thats most likely because this has absolutely nothing to do with Windows Update. DrScouse
DOH! Yeah, just re-read the article... just assumed that WU would also have it in place, not just the download centre!!!! Gary_Player
Wow...so some programer TOTALLY just wasted their time :( I thought there was some court agreement back in the day that said MS couldn't collect any information from the computers connecting to their update servers? Regardless of the fact that the serial is issued from them, I wouldn't think that they would be able to just check everybody's  Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/218765-microsoft-download-centre-demanig-os-validation/page/2/#findComment-584576195 Share on other sites
C:Amie
:woot: Yey me! My first frontpage news posting :D & 2 in the software section :D I think that this has to be a test bed. Any legal agreements to not collect personal information from WU are unlikly to apply as this is ms.com. Also I'm pretty sure under US / UK law the copyright holder is entitled to enforce it. So why wouldn't Microsoft be allowed to check for pirated copies of it's own software? Let's assume that this isn't taking personal info for a minute. They can still get a good grasp of which keys are being prolifically exploited by warezers and have them locked down - giving people a nasty surprise in XP SP3. Speculation of course. The fact that this is appearing in Linux though... nice oversight there.
