j.r.l.
My good computer cold boots at 15 seconds but I never reboot, I put it on S3 whenever I need to and in case the power goes out, I have a small backup (online UPS) that keeps the RAM running for about 2 hours. So boot times never exceed 2 seconds. Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/220190-your-fastest-boot-time/page/9/#findComment-587393752 Share on other sites

cork1958
Oh yeah. I set and time all 7 of my systems every time they boot! They ALL take less than a minute though. Cripe!! Even my Intel Celeron 600mhz with only 384MB's memory boots Ubuntu Linux up quicker than that. It booted Windows XP up quicker than that also, up until yesterday anyway, when I installed Ubuntu Dapper as the ONLY OS I will be using from now on!! daCrazyDude
This is all BS. Shut down means shut down. Not hibernation or standby. And people are posting blistering startup times because they don't have any startup items, have RAID support with 10000K RPM drives (that's quite OK - I have nothing against those people; it's their money after all) and turning the Windows prefetch off. Turning off prefetch speeds up things only if you don't have anything in the startup. Sure it will lower the number of times the green bar moves from left to right, but after you enter the password, it will take longer to get to a fully operational desktop. I have few items on startup (to name them, Windows Live Messenger, NOD32, ADSL AutoConnect, HotKeyboard, uTorrent, AntiCrash, TaskSwitchXP and Ad-Watch - all of these are essential to me), so I never disable prefetch. Besides, with prefetch, you get faster application startups. IMO that's more important than Windows bootup (which you would probably see once a day or less). However, to answer the original question... I'd say about 30-40 seconds from the time I hit the power button. This is on an AthlonXP 2600+ with 1.25GB RAM (heading towards 2GB because increasing Windows cache has proven to be a very effective performance enhancer) and 2MB cached 7200RPM 160GB hard drive without RAID or anything fancy. I have done several things to fix some issues as well as make Windows XP SP2 more stable and now I'm leaning towards Hibernation rather than complete shutdown. It sure is faster than the standard Windows boot. Besides, I can leave the programs I run more often open, such as Outllok and Firefox. This is where that 2GB RAM steps in. Overall, this is a faster Windows experience. Omnichronos
My computer takes just over 12 minutes to boot!!!! And that's after using bootvis, several spyware & antivirus scans, Black Viper's reccomended running processes, pcpitstop, several reg cleaners, removing all startup programs, replacing faulty hardware etc. It's that slow in safe mode too.
