Roguefoxx
Hi, I have a Pentium 3, 866Mhz Dell with 512MB pc100 ram. I am wondering what the ideal OS to run on this box would be? I do alot of gaming and would be playing alot of Counter-Strike on this box. Can you please give me your opinions on what I should use and why? Regards, RogueFoxx

Roguefoxx
I've tried to use XP and have ran lots of different setups with it with services on and off etc... and it just doesn't seem to want to run well while trying to play games and other things on it. b0m8er
XP!!! I have XP running on P3 667 Mhz with 256 mb of memory! It runs perfectly - with all themes and animation stuff enabled Trust me - it's more than enough for XP!
sp1k3
...i have "tried" cs on my celeron 467mhz....its under "recommended specifications" and i get 30fps (and like 10fps in gun fights :p, but still its all good :p)
pmh
XP, disable themeing and it will be a half decent cs machine.
OPaul
CS used to run on my 566 Celeron with XP... until Steam came out.

Roguefoxx
How does Steam affect performance??? uses up memory I believe. To those of you who run XP on similar machines, are you running SP2 as well or no? Also, I think my pc100 ram may be an issue as it is VERY SLOW =/
OPaul
How does Steam affect performance??? It makes the game unplayable.
b0m8er
Ram's not a problem - I have the same RAM on that machine - and I tell you - Works like it meant to! As for Steam memory usage - just close it, when you're playing games. I can't try it on that machie but I noticed no Steam-related slowdowns on my laptop. (P4, 512 mb ram)

A P4 and a Celeron are very different.
shihchiun
it would have to be some form of windows, because if you do a lot of gaming linux might not support all the games you want to play.
allfive6
I have a old Celeron 766 256 ram with XP pro on it with SP2. It runs find but would be better if I put 2000 pro on it. But because it is not even in my top 5 computers I leave xp on it.
vertigosity
Yeah, XP doesn't use much more footprint at all than 2000, the only differences are the prettiness things (which look pretty, a good thing IMHO) and prefetching (a Very Good Thing as well), so there's no reason to go with 2000 over XP (It's no less IE-comingled if that's your thing to bitch about.). A nice optimized 98 install would do nicely on your box, though, but it tends to take a little more work and be a little less stable.

Oh, I would definately use Windows. I only tinker with Linux from time to time. I think I may do a fresh XP install and stay away from the SP2 on this PC. lostspyder
Xp has this awsome ability to scale VERY well. Best OS as far as scalability while still having state of the art features afaik. Ive run it on 300MHZ pentium machines. A little laggy but it still ran smoothly. Linux has gotten fat with all the hohos its been eating as of late. Circaflex
put 2000 or 98, dont waste your time using XP, youll have to tweak and do all kinds of crazy stuff to make XP workable, 2000 out of the box would work best. I see it being pointless running XP on such low end systems.

You can get distro's which fit on a 64 Meg USB keychain. Can you say the same about XP? Anywho, I say Windows 2000. It doesn't have a lot of the BS XP has such as themes. I've run it very well on a Pentium MMX 233MHz. You may need to disable some of the useless stuff, but overall, it's good. Oh, and xp is pretty much the same as 2000 except with a few "enhancments". I doubt the two are very different from a kernel level perspective.
grindlestone
I'd go with 2000. It does require a few less resources, is just as stable, is a little less buggy, can be fined down easily (less services to turn off) and runs games just as well as XP (I tested them against each other and got identical frame rates). You also don't have to activate it every time you want to reinstall.
m!ke
yeah i would go with windows 2000. I just remembered it ran alot smoother than XP on my old cel 667 machine. and if you want any eye candy you can just download winblinds or stylexp
MazX_Napalm
Windows 2000. Don't even try Windows 98. XP would run, but W2K would suite specs.
