lecter
For whatever reason, Windows is giving me the "Open With" dialog instead of actually opening the file...it doesn't happen with all my files-basically, video (.avi, .mpeg, etc.) and .rar are giving me this problem. Any ideas? I have of course checked the default application preferences, both WMP and WinRAR are supposed to open these files and the icons also appear properly (not like it's an unknown file). Thanks in advance for any help.
Bold_Fortune
Have you been using any registry cleaners lately? I know this can happen with some registry cleaners when they delete empty strings.
lecter
Hmm, now that I think about it, McAfee's AntiSpyware program might have done it, I used it for the first time last night, after which this problem started. The question now is, how do I solve it?
Bold_Fortune
You can try something that used to work for me. Look for the WMP9 Codec Pack from Microsoft. This would sometimes set things straight for me with media files opening correctly again.
lecter
I managed to solve it...something had gotten screwed up in Folder Options/File Types, a bunch of file extensions were so-called "customized" and had a Restore option. I just applied that to all the file types that exhibited it and it did the trick. Thanks for the ideas, though :)
