VoodooX
We have about 800 Windows 2000 SP4 machines in our domain. We use roaming profiles for each user. The user's profiles are stored on the local fileservers... We are upgrading all of the machines to windows xp. We're going to reimage them with all updated software (office 2k to office 2003 etc). When we log in as the user on the new xp images, it pulls down the windows 2000 looking profile on the xp machines. Is there any way to update the stored profiles to the 'xp' 'luna' look (not classic) so that it doesn't retain the classic 2k look on the new xp machines. It will take too much time to convert each profile manually on the new machines. Please let me know if you need anymore info...thanks guys VoodooX
Maxious
maybe group policy could work here. http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documen...e_term_lgvk.asp
+BudMan MVC Posted October 9, 2004 MVC Share Posted October 9, 2004 Question - do you have users that move from machine to machine all the time? Are you all the time changing the hardware, ie people getting replacement machines all the time? When used - yes roaming profiles can be great. But in a setup where everyone has their own machine, and they do not move about from machine to machine. Nor is their machine getting changed all the time. What need is there to store the profiles on the network somewhere for starters - just sucking up alot of space if you ask me. I mean really - do you need a copy of every users temp internet files stored on your file server(s)? You can turn this off - but I rarely see it done. What need do you have that requires every time a user logs on and off to xfer their profile across your network?

We do roaming profiles to backup the My Documents folder and desktop for users for backup purposes. Our auditors take their laptops to the field contsantly and we backup their profiles as a security precaution. This includes using offline files with encryption. Thanks for everyone's help. +BudMan MVC Posted October 10, 2004 MVC Share Posted October 10, 2004 I'd like to do this. Please post us a set-by-step. Thanks here is a start to your ? http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=185255 but for starters, I would really look over the need for roaming profiles at all. Here is some more info; http://www.winguides.com/registry/display.php/142/ http://www.jsiinc.com/SUBA/tip0100/rh0106.htm http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?...&NoWebContent=1 It is really rare that roaming profiles have any real use! I would higly suggest you look into not using them ;)

You can backup their Documents and such without using roaming profiles. Look towards Group Policy for this solution. This will save you time in the long run and space. verb`
We tried roaming profiles, and they proved to be a pain, but we needed to accomplish the same things you are looking to do, like backups, increased security and so forth. What we do is use redirection via a group policy. We redirect a users My documents and desktop folder to a network location. This used in conjunction with offline files allows data to be taken on the go, and then synced with the network location when they return, letting us backup the data. You can configure redirection by openening a group policy and navigating to User configuration/windows settings/folder redirection. I have a feeling this may be a better fit for you long term.
