Sorry, but you are assuming that the minimum wage makes up a great deal of the economy, and that labour is a very large part of the economy. Both of which are untrue.

Imagine a factory assembling printed circuit boards (if such thing exists in the US - anymore). Let's say they pay everyone minimum wage because it's really simple to slot a component in and turn it over and solder it, especially if you do the exact same thing thousands of times a day.

I'd guess that their minimum wage labour costs are less than 10% of their costs. Most will probably go in machinery, parts, middle management, rent, utilities, shipping and marketing.

Now let's assume that these types of factory produces 1% of the USAs (totally insane, I know) wealth. That would mean inflation would rise 0.1%. Really, quite insignificant compared with the amount of money that increased minimum wage saves in crime reduction, social welbeing, more money in the hands of the poorest etc etc etc.

In the UK the minimum wage is now ?4.85/hr which is just under $9/hour. The government has raised it nearly year on year, and no-one complains. Infact, inflation is at it's lowest for many, many years.

Of course, minimum wage doesn't really pay very much in the scheme of things. A rise of 0.25% on the federal intrest rate would probably increase inflation by 0.5%, which makes 0.1% look tiny.

Under Bush it is becoming a bigger and bigger part of the economy as more and more jobs are in the service sector which mostly just pays minimum wage.

Many large corporations pay little to no taxes and yet they are still shipping many good paying jobs overseas to countries which pay in one week what many of these jobs pay in the US in one hour.

You're looking at this incorrectly.

Raising minimum wages (especially combined with higher taxes for businesses) has traditionally lead to a drop in the number of jobs being created.  Why?  If each employee costs you more, and your company is being taxed more, you have less money to hire new employees with.  Many minimum wage employees also lose their job when the wage is increased for similar reasons.

As I had said, many of these corporations already pay little to no taxes as it is. The biggest form of welfare in the US is Corporate Welfare.

The UK also has extremely high cost of living.  The extra few dollars an hour that a guy earns at McDonalds in the UK is going to pay for his more expensive flat and tea and crumpets!  j/k but cost of is higher in the UK!

584743027

. Yes, the cost of living is higher, but not across the entire country. In London yes, you have some of the world's higest cost of living, but in the Northwest (where I am from), it's probably the same as most of America. Yes, we have 17.5% sales tax (VAT) and very expensive petrol, but food and similar is not vastly more expensive. If anything it's probably cheaper due to in general our food production is more efficent (it's forced to be because we have far less land).

And remember, if you are on minimum wage you get a lot of tax credits, help with education, childcare, free healthcare along with pay very few taxes (most people on minimum wage would probably pay no income tax). And also we have council housing, which is very cheap housing for the socially-needed.

I'm a registered voter and I'm voting for Kerry.

There is no point to justify anything here. People already made up their minds. Bush people will just ignore Bush's 4 year record as the president or say its not his fault or its hard work.

If Kerry wins, I kinda feel sorry for him because he'll have to clean up someone else's mess.

but your from England.... you don't receive US taxes, you don't buy homes in the US, you don't buy gas in the US, you don't know what we deal with in the US. you are speaking from what you know from the BBC, so please, don't say we can't survive...

584742406

I don't care about US taxes or gas or house prices. I don't care what you 'deal with' in the USA but considering how people like you are always harping on about how the USA is the greatest country in the world, you can't have it too badly.

Speaking from experience I know for a fact that the UK has a much less biassed media than the US. You hear all your news from institutions such as CNN and Fox. Don't assume that we, as Britons, speak from our experience with the BBC. We have other world news organisations which are well known for their objective and unbiassed viewpoints.

The poster was right - another four years with Bush in control of the most powerful country of the world would be extremely detrimental to the world as a whole. How it affects you, as an American, I don't really care. You are a credit to the Republican party though. With imbeciles like you and Bush enrolled they certainly have the ability to continue to destruct the world for a number of years.

Yes, the service sector obviously is different, but again, the minimum wage is very insignificant compared to takings from a more 'economically-happy' society. If people are always having to work 80 hour weeks to just make ends meet, they are not going to use the service sector.

It's too bad our health care system may go down the drain though, we will need more money in our pockets to pay for that! sad.gif

Maybe in Canada, but in the UK good ol' Mr Blair (joking, somewhat) has earmarked anohter ?50billion increase for the healthcare system over the next 5 years (IIRC). That's around $90billion, or if you translated it to US population size, somewhere around $400billion.

Go Bush!

Why bush cause? bush can't stop stuff like 9-11 happening

Neither could Kerry, War is gonna happen war isn't gonna stop people are attacking US because of Freedom, but thats what US is about is Freedom thats why people come to the US is for freedom but, why are we the only ones that have to have all the freedom and no one else?

is because of the President? no it has nothing to do with president it has something to do with freedom so as long as we have freedom and can do whatever we want and what we stand for in this life, we face a consequence later on. We gotta set the rules of our own country we can't allow people to run us, we gotta run them.

I dont know how the world can sit there worry about all the soldiers dying and itching for it to stop, when the same people are for ABORTION, children are more to us then what you think they are, so get off your hating children spell and go make life instead of destroying life hating others for it, whatever you think of me I don't care Im for US will always be, but we gotta be for ALL the people of us instead of soldiers, and against Children

Yes but it is sad that we still have people here with Bush/Cheney sig pictures and avatars!! Bush supporters are some of the most vocal and will help sway some of the swing voters to the wrong side.

Absolutely.

I read something very intresting (can't remember where, sadly), that most Republicans that are not ueber-rich are only Republican because somewhere inside them, they have the belief that eventually they will join the social-elite and then they will reap the 'rewards'. It makes a lot of sense.

PS: I don't think a 2 party system works very well in such a huge country like the USA. 3 party would be far better. It just get's too polarised otherwise.

First off, only the really religiously engaged people (mainly Catholic and Baptist) are anti-abortion. Most people in this world are for a womens right to choose! A full grown member of society in his prime dying for a reason inwhich he shouldn't have to, is different then aborting a pregenancy in the first trimester. DON'T even try to compare the two!!

This is the average intelligence of the bush supporter.

Bush's ignoramity doesn't matter to them. Why ? Because they're DUMBER than bush is.

Not all jobs will come back but at least Kerry will make the incentive for corporations to come back with tax cuts for them.
