Homer
Hey, Just a quick one, on my server box I have 3 NIC's installed, one being wireless. Now, my wireless here is painfully slow and laggy, the other two NIC's are connected to my switch in here, which links these 3 comps + laptop together, effectively providing a fast network for my room. The wireless on all of the machines is only used for the internet, as I do not have a wire running up into my room from the router downstairs. Cutting to the chase, every so often (randomly) Windows will add an entry into the DNS for my server name, with the wireless IP as the resolving IP. I don't mind it doing it for the other two NIC's as this only serves my room. How can I stop it from doing this? I'm currently using the HOSTS file, but sometimes, I forget to modify it after formatting, and or it doesn't work sometimes for some reason. You should try logging off a 50mb-10gb profile on wireless... it takes a damn long time so I want this fixed so it will always use the ethernet link. Thanks in advance guys, Homer. MazX_Napalm
Use the wired NIC's Ip as the default gateway on client pc's In your DNS Forward Lookup Zone you should have an (A) record for every NIC on the domain that is using that DNS server for name resolution. In your DNS Reverse Lookup Zone you should have an (PTR) record for every NIC on the domain that is using that DNS server for name resolution. MazX_Napalm
If the gateway is set to one of the wired nic's then traffic should go through that one. have you got load balancing set up? if so this could be the problem. Homer
No load balancing, but the client machines have a wireless NIC too, so they can get to the net. Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/233814-ip-problem/#findComment-584784175 Share on other sites
MazX_Napalm
A bit confused here. Does you setup work like this? Telephone socket to modem Modem to server Server to switch Switch to clients (wired) Or are you using a router? Homer
This should explain it better than words :p : Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/233814-ip-problem/#findComment-584787682 Share on other sites
MazX_Napalm
Ok on Homeserver 1 set the default gateway on the wifi to the ip of the wireless router. Set the default gateway of the downstairs pc to the ip of the router Set the default gateway of the homeserver 2 and homer to the ip of the homeserver1 (wired nic's ip) This should force the pc's connected to homeserver1 to connect through the wired nic on the server. Your internet will still go through the wireless because there is no physical connection between the router and the server. But all traffic should go through the server anyway.
