Bhav
yes, most of my school's computers have it installed. the only problem is permissions mean profiling often screws up and sometimes firefox doesn't even start. also, they had 0.9 for ages, then recently they upgraded it to 0.10.1, and they still haven't put 1.0 on. you can install it yourself on your own userspace, but profiling is still an issue, and once again, it doesn't always start. in fact, firefox is EXTREMELY buggy at school, with multiple crashes and lag. fortunately, i don't get this at home, where it's more important :)
+Mystic MVC Posted November 17, 2004 MVC Share Posted November 17, 2004 Well our school only has 1 computer with Firefox so far. So far our school isn't that big on security as our connection not excellent so natually most hackers wouldn't spend a lot of time on there, but I still see it as a gap left wide open even if a small computer network was comprimised. Godzilla
My old school was second best high school in the country, every PC was less that 333mhz (mainly 133), and all ran IE4. And it was still like that a year ago

clonk
My school (University of Nebraska at Omaha) deployed Firefox a few days after it hit 1.0. However, this is only the Computer Science and Engineering departments (to my knowledge) as each department has their own IT staff, and there are quite bitter idealogy differences between some of them (for example, the library uses custom built PC's from a local business, most departments swear by Dell, and then the CS and Eng departments swear by IBM). At least we have one standard wireless network across campus, although some departments have yet to roll out infastructure to support it.

temple_treefrog
It wouldn't be a wise move to incorporate Firefox into a school network. I think MSIE would be the best software for a school. The reason being is because MSIE is officially supported by Microsoft and many other technical support companies, MSIE has a range of adminstration tools that most administrators are familiar with and admins have more of the MSIE software. Introducing Firefox would be a risk. I personally dont think it should be introduced to a school or corporate environment.
lieb39
Well its installed on the school computers at my school.. IE is main but firefox is installed. But its the copy that needs to be patched (.8 or soemthing) so its a security risk.. I just use IE because i dont get asked for a password :-p cheers, lieb39
Yvo
Like kizaa said, right now Firefox is really geared for standalone boxes. That is (unfortunately) the advantage of IE. It is directly incorporated with the security policies of Windows 2000/2003 server. Very easy to setup & update. I am not even sure if Firefox can be managed from a snapin like IE can. If it can, point me in the direction.... Sys Admins are busy (in education or corporate, doesn't matter) and no offense, but most of them don't have TIME to actually go around a school and install an alternative browser that will hardly get used. Considering it is a literal pain to roll out Firefox unlike IE where an update to the policy just requires a logoff and logon, Firefox has to be changed differently. Call sys admins lazy but if they can save 30 seconds on one task, that means they have 30 seconds extra for the next. Yes Firefox is more secure (for now) and I personally use Firefox as well, but IE has advantages in the world of Network Administration where Firefox can not be touched yet. Maybe in 2.0? They also have FTP and HTTP. HTTPS (for that s**t MYCLASSLINK thing so we can access work from home). NDMP which I believe is for Upnp network devices so there must be some way to exploit that aswell and they still have a go at me for opening command prompt.
