Something missing in Control Panel...

Recommended Posts

I'm unable to view other components in the Control Panel unless I switch to the Classic View. I tried to restore to an earlier time but didn't help, anybody know what might've happened here?

I opened my Control Panel to see what you mean, and I get the same thing as you.

Maybe the other components are shown when you are in a category. Open like Appearance and Themes and you will see some more components in the area you circled in your screenshot.

There used to be an option there where you can view other components in the Control Panel while in the category view, but now it's gone-just disappeared.

First question, do you have any third party programs installed that would add an cpl applet?  if not, that might be a reason you don't see it.

Of course I do, if you want me to name 'em they're "Sound Effect Manager", "Symantec liveUpdate", "QuickTime", "JavaPlugin"...... there were more but can't remember the rest...

I usually use classic view, but just to check, switched. I do get the other control panel options, but clicking on that only shows two out of a good half dozen (e.g. Symantec, quicktime, Java, DirectX, PC Wizard 2004 don't show).

To get the missing ones to show under other control panel options, I added a corresponding Dword for each at

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Control Panel\Extended Properties\{305CA226-D286-468e-B848-2B2E8E697B74} 2

Dword name: %systemRoot%\system32\name of the cpl file.cpl

value of Dword: 0

The cpl files for the icons that appear in the control panel are in C:\windows\system32. except for a few (e.g. Symantec Live update is in C:\Program Files\Symantec\LiveUpdate

If you want them to appear in one of the other categories, change the value of the Dword from 0 ., e.g. I put my AudigyHQ in sounds by giving its Dword a value of 4
