Which OS should I switch to?

Question

Hi!

I was planning to switch OSes on my computer from Windows 98 SE. However, I detest Windows ME since when I tried it, I couldn't update any software and when I tried to update IE on it, my system screwed up! I was wondering what OS should I switch to and I'm not including Linux since Linux is already on my PC and I'm keeping it on since it's still better than Windows. Here are the two options which I was considering :

1) Windows 2000 Professional

2) Windows XP Professional

Also, include your reasoning!

Thanks!

Windows XP. Reasoning? Its just better! No, seriously, I have found everything about it to be better than 2000 - speed, stability and so on. I also find it has loads of little features that help you out (you might think you don't need them but they can be very handy) like the networking wizards, digital camera image transfer, audio cataloging.

Don't forget as well that 2000 has far less driver support, even at this early stage in XPs life. If you have old or obscure (and sometimes even not) hardware getting working drivers in 2K can be a real pain. Most things work with XP right away.

I recommend XP for the mere fact that it is marginly more stable and more compatible.

This brings me to my question, are you desperate to put a MS OS on your HD? :cheeky:

If you aren't I would advise waiting a little longer until SP1 is released. The reason is there have been too many small bugs reported in XP by people here. I am not sure if they will be fixed upon the release of SP1, but is it worth worrying or attempting to fix these problems before then?

Maybe it is just because the majority of people posting here have XP, or maybe XP has more bugs than 2000. I am starting to lean towards the latter explanation...

I don't think it is too bad bug-wise aco. Sure a lot of little bugs are reported here but this forum has 1000s of visitors and that is the kind of thing these forums are for. I think compared to the first release of previos MS OSs XP is not bad at all. There are certainly no bugs that stop me wanting to use it.

XP? Ok then! However, the one thing that I'm not comfortable about getting Windows XP because of the product activation and I was planning on seeing if I could bypass that (if it's possible). Like would it be possible about trying to getting it off Morpheus and just generate a different product key? Cause if it is, then I'll proceed with XP! Since XP Professional is like $500 for the Full version and $300 for the Upgrade version. Of course the cash amounts I'm referrign to are in Canadian Dollars!

Bypassing product activation is a touchy subject but it can indeed be done and has. There are ISO's all over the net where this has been taken care of for you. Or you can get a hold of a 13 mb "patch" that will replace select files in the i386 folder and convert it to the "corporate" version. Once having done that product activation is literally removed from the product and so is not neccessary. Good luck ! ;)

This is the Australian pricing for XP at the moment....yikes !! :o

*Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition $419

*Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition Upgrade $215

*Microsoft Windows XP Professional $629

*Microsoft Windows XP Professional Upgrade $435

HI,

You can get XP Home Edition for half the price.

Also, activation is not a problem at all. Check this out about XP activation. MS did some significant positive changes to it:

Here's the approximate pricing for Canada :

Windows XP Home Upgrade : $149

Windows XP Home Full : $299

Windows XP Professional Upgrade : $299

Windows XP Professional Full : $499

And Keldyn, where can I download that 13 MB patch in case if the CD file I download does NOT have that patch?
