djgramma
The thing that i love about nintendo is that they dont just follow the "crowd". They are innovators not followers. If they would've "just stabbed it with a mini-analog stick" then they would just be another fish in a sea of many. By creating a hand held w/ 2 screens, one of which is touch sensistive, theyre not only comming up with a new style of handheld, theyre are changing the way games are made. That is something that i respect. 585024303 Right on! :D That's why Nintendo still has the handheld market and all others who "try" to innovate just get burned. NGage is one example of a good idea executed horribly wrong. Nintendo seems to be the smartest in their handheld department, as they haven't lost any money on this yet (*ahem*pokemon*cough*) But when you talk about adults and handheld gaming, you think Palm and the simple games like Bejeweled or card games on the Pocket PC. This is where a dual screen with an included touchscreen functionality, wireless gaming and a big oomph to power gives us big boys and girls headway to gaming-on-the-go. I'd like to get one when I'm finished with my GBASP, and it sounds like it'll be soon  Thumbs up peeps! You just sold me to the DS. Cheers Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/251559-nintendo-ds-my-first-impressions/page/3/#findComment-585029437 Share on other sites
Manicdvln
Hows the thumb strap work ?? can anyone explain 585029410 You tighten the strip on your thumb which under your thumb there is a shoe like oval plastic that you will use on your touch screen like an analog nub or mouse... Makes it smoother on the touch screen, cause your fingers are dirty and wont be as swift on the LCD. You can also use stylus, but some games it is kinda akward Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/251559-nintendo-ds-my-first-impressions/page/3/#findComment-585030162 Share on other sites
.....
Got my import system first thing Tuesday morning with a copy of Super Mario 64 DS, and I'm loving it so far. I've since bought The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap (UK GBA) and have Metroid Zero Mission (JP GBA) and Mr. Driller: Drill Spirits (JP DS) on the way. I really don't think Gamespot / IGN spent enough time with Mario before reviewing it, as I was initially frustrated with all the different control methods. (D-Pad is the worst by far though) However, after the initial learning curve I'd say that control with the stylus (prefer it to the thumb strap) is easily as good as an analogue stick. I'm finding that if I die, it feels like it's my fault, and not the controls. (although in some of the later levels it's the camera ;)) Minish Cap is a fantastic game as well, classic Zelda gameplay with a ton of stuff to do, and some excellent graphics. I've got about 60 stars in Mario now, all the characters unlocked, and just one more minigame to get. (can't find that last rabbit anywhere...) Oh, and I've done every star as Mario, apart from the ones that require you to use a cap and another character's abilities. The Metroid Prime: Hunters First Hunt demo is good, although it feels more like an early e3 demo than one that should've been released to the public. Hopefully it won't just be a plain shooter and will be a "proper" Metroid Prime game, but I would still rather have a high res 2D game instead. One last thing I should say is that the graphics in Mario / Metroid look much better than they did in screenshots / videos, as they all have quite a bit of compression. The games look really nice, and (aside from texture filtering, which isn't that noticable on the actual screens when playing) definitely better than they did on the N64. Danrarbc
I don't think Metroid Prime: Hunters is supposed to be anything more than a shooter, that's the impression I got from the interviews. They should probably remove Prime from the title to get that idea across. .....
I've got 75 now, but it's starting to get a fair bit harder to get more. I expect getting all 150 will take at least twice as long as it has to get to 75. Still, I'm loving every minute of it, as it's my first proper play of Mario 64. (I always wanted an n64, but couldn't afford it) That's partly why I've been using Mario for all the stars I can, as the new characters seem to make a lot of them very easy to get when they're a nightmare with Mario. bacd
I just picked up my DS this evening, and have enjoyed the quick round of minigames I played on Mario....the touch screen is quite an interestign concept, even if I have been plauged with the dead pixel plague....(damn it, even has happened in Japan)...can't wait to play it a bit more while I'm bored at work tomorrow... This plus my PSP will make my Japan--> USA trip much more tolerable! Thanks 585046322 I originally ordered it from videogamesplus.ca but ended up grabbing it from ebay for ?110 all in. I'd still recommend getting it from vg+, no customs fees with them either. It's out in March next year in the UK:hmmm:: As of now, my DS is AWOL, I took it round my bosses house last night before our christmas party and left it there, we all piled round there afterwards and it's suspiciously absent:hmmm:: That DS best be in my office at 8 tommorow morning... I seem to be spending more time in those then the actual game. 585046341 There are 9 mini games for each charater with a total of 36 mini games. And I can concur, the mini games are more addictive and fun to play than game itself. Maybe when you get all the mini games, we will start comparing scores against each other, make a nice fun comeptition. I do it with my friends and family, it is really fun to see who gets highest score for each game! rekka
I've been following recent DS and PSP developments. Looks like the DS is gonna be the 1st handheld I've ever bought :) Can't wait for a UK release. One thing: Can one invert the Y Axis in Metroid Prime? i.e. so that if you push up the character looks down and if you pull down the character looks up. Thanks :) Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/251559-nintendo-ds-my-first-impressions/page/3/#findComment-585229824 Share on other sites
