One more thing. This thread might actually get somewhere and lead to some discussion if people would start psoting 'why' they don't like X genre, as opossed to simply making dull lists.

It's a hard choice to make, I like most of the songs in every listed genre (except for Country/Jazz/Classical, I don't really listen to it but don't mind it) but there's always songs listed under a genre that twists its meaning (not to mention songs that I hate).

I'd say the genre I dislike most is Heavy Metal (The songs with just scream-fests, I love PM5000, Slipknot, Manson, System of a Down, etc. though)

Well, as much as I dislike both Country and Rap, I had to say Pop. It has absolutely no substance whatsoever. Even some rap songs have substance, and country has some merit too, but Pop is full of no-talent singers with empty songs. It just doesn't make any sense.

Theres a few I don't like.. R'n'B, Pop style HipHop, Pop rock (Blink 182 etc...)and Christmas songs (I hate to be a kill joy, but do people really need to start playing them a month before christmas?). I think thats about it.

Pop. I hate manufactured music. What ever happened to a group of musicians getting together and writing music together, and not using all kinds of technology in the studio to make thier crappy voices sound good? Country is a close second. I can't say why, I just think it sounds aweful.

Acoustic Rage

Please explain to me how Death Metal doesn't sound like music.

mu-sic - The art of arranging sounds in time so as to produce a continuous, unified, and evocative composition, as through melody, harmony, rhythm, and timbre.

www.dictionary.com

So tell me, is it not music simply because guitars are detuned, drumming is more prominent, lyrical themes are generally more gore related and they use a different vocal style, despite the fact that it follows the definition of music?

Oh, this post also goes out to anyone that's ever said rap isn't music. You're just calling yourself ignorant by making that statement, regardless of what you think of the genre or the bands.

It's just a different ****ing style, still the same thing. Why can't people just appreciate different styles?

Would you like to see the same art style everywhere you look? Everyone using nothing but minimal vector art? I mean EVERYWHERE. Ads, wallpapers, billboards, commercials, T-Shirt logos, candy wrappers etc.

How long would it take for you to grow to loathe that art style?

Using this analogy, why can't people accept that every genre will have it's pieces of ****, often times found at the most mainstream level, but there is more often than not some good ****ing music underneath that thin layer of crap.

I was listneing to one of my favorite death metal bands when I just got home from working on the newspaper tonight, the band Death. Now yo umay be thinking, they're probably just a bunch of muscular, grunting beer drinkers that can bang on their guitars quickly, but if you'd take the time to go to www.darklyrics.com and look up their album Individual Thought Patterns, you'd see some introspective lyrics and others revolving around things like jealousy and those who seem to do nothing but criticize others.

You can do the same thing with any genre.

Rap: Bling bling my bitches, lets go smoke a joint then talk about how bad we be.

-or-

Go check out Public Enemy who sang about political themes.

Jazz: A bunch of stoned trumpet players making boring 50's music crap.

-or-

Search for a man under the name of Al Di Meola, and maybe look into the song Mediterranean Sundance.

Metal: Just a bunch of long haired ****s screaming about worthless **** who can't play instruments.

-or-

Go get Dream Theater's song 'Scarred.' One of the best intros I've ever heard to a song, period.....11 minutes of instrumental proficiency and beautiful, sung vocals. The Lyrics are about more than banging your head too.

You could also try Opeth's 'Nectar.' Beautiful, melancholic riffs compliment the vocals very well. This song demonstrates that while they use growling vocals for the majority of the song, they can be emotional, pianful, tortured growls. Growled vocals are capable of delivering emotion in a way that sung vocals can't...I'm not saying it's better or worse, jsut that it's different and can be very powerful, as this song shows. Beautiful acoustic break with soft, non-growled vocals at 6:20 - 8:00 or so as well. This shows how metal can be as emotional as emo, be more creative and inspired in 1 song than most bands are in an album, yet still be something you can sit and headbang to. Lyrics.

People need to throw away their petty pre-judgements of genres and give them a chance and appreciate the styles for what they are.
