ChrisJM
Hi, Its that time again, i am looking to upgrade my processor. My normal usage of my pc is 70% browsing internet, using programs etc and then 30% is gaming. I am either gonna go for: AMD Athlon 64 3400+ or Intel p4 Northwood 3.2Ghz Th reason i cannot go for a prescott is because i've recently got a new cpu cooler (which was kinda pricy!) and it wond run in silent mode with the prescott! Please help me find the better processor! Thanks.
Andrew Lyle Global Moderator Posted December 5, 2004 Global Moderator Share Posted December 5, 2004 intel.... more expensive tho... AMD's are so ****** up these days... more problems (IMO) with AMD then intel...
SoapyHamHocks Member Posted December 5, 2004 Member Share Posted December 5, 2004 I would go for the p4.
DigitalN.
I say AMD, just because they are better at gaming. lylesback2: maybe you should check you have all your drivers installed and ****.
coolmonk
Both CPUs are almost equal...although I'd prefer the AMD 64 3400+ over the 3.2C if both were running at stock speeds. At overclocked speeds however, I'd prefer the 3.2C as it can reach 4GHz.
ChrisJM
so, which CPU is the best overall for what i use my pc for?
Furcifer
It depends on how you like to use your computer. I like being able to encode a video while playing video games with hyperthreading. If you can get by with playing games and not having the computer do anything else in the meantime, then amd is a better choice for you.
+dave164 Subscriber¹ Posted December 5, 2004 Subscriber¹ Share Posted December 5, 2004 here we go again... The AMD 64 3400+ will out-benchmark the p4 3.2Ghz because of its architecture. Also your future proof for the future 64 bit OS's. If you can stretch out for a s939 system, more futureproof. Get a 3500+ with a MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum :) dave164
islanq
If you are not over clocking get the 3400+, if you are over clocking get the 3.2.

tr1kstanc3
well the choice is obvious. if you spend 70% of the time browsing then it wont matter which cpu you are using. however, you will notice the difference in gaming and the amd64 is the faster chip. this is based purely on what you have told me. i use both amd 64 and intel chips here =)
ChrisJM
ok, so far im not sure! sometimes i play games a lot sometimes i dont. but... tbh i would like to game and use my pc while burning dvds etc. So i want a good gaming cpu but also a good multi tasking cpu. kitchenutensils
id say AMD straight off; but if you're into media stuff then you might want the intel.
ChrisJM
well, i think the AMD looks a bit better, and better value for money. I do some media but its the performance and stuff im looking for and i have cutting edge parts to my pc other than my mobo and processor. tbh i dont wanna spend ?232 on a processor and mobo (the ones reccommended by dave164) which are on ebuyer. I will go for the Athlon 64 3400+ i think but keep posting cos i havent made my final decision yet! Now, which motherboard should i get?
kitchenutensils
i duno - i dont know huge amounts about mobos but well i've heard good stuff about nVidias (i think - don't get me wrong!)

shakey
burning dvds while playing games???? can you really not wait the 15 mins for the dvd to finish burning? eat a apple or something, then you wont really have to worry about performance. lol
NeoXY
a 64bit is still a 64 bit....so I would say AMD....
stezo2k
AMD64 no doubt, go for the 3500+ socket 939 though, much more advantage over a socket 754 setup :)
ChrisJM
lol. The point i was trying to make was i want the best performing one! ;) so is the AMD or Intel best performing?
