"and the UMD, when the PSP is twisted, actually flies out!" ???? 585100950[/snapback] To be fair the PSP is a more advanced machine then the DS, with moving parts. Thus it has a higher likelyhood of developing problems. I'm quite certain Sony will fix these problems in later revisions. The dead pixels come with the territory when dealing with LCDs, of which the PSP has a much bigger and higher resolution screen as well.

bacd
the strangest thing tho is the memory....sony is charging you about $10 or more per 32M card just because it has the PSP logo on it... i took one and went to look at the same memory cards for digicam at Denkodo (an electronics store here) and the digicam ones had the price advantage...i mean 32M PSP card for $30 when I get get digicam 256M for $100 bucks... and yes, most magic gate cards will work, and teh specs on the two cards were teh same, except for the size difference... bacd
A view of the PSP... Being a fortunate soul and have a PSP pre-orderd, I arrived at my local store early that fateful Sunday (who releases something on a Sunday????) where a short line was starting to form, mostly those without the preorders. After a short waitteh doors opened and I was able to get my PSP, much to the jealousy of the others that had not been able to pre-order their's (hahah dumbasses)... Anyway, I will spare you the pictures of the box and me opening it for the first time as it would be the exact same as all the other pictures you have already seen, and why bore you with those again. If you want pictures of something, let me know and I will be more than happy to take a pictur eof it (but not the inside of it, i have my limits!) I will instead move straight to my hands-on review... System Software Upon the frst power up, you are able to select a system language of English or Japanese and then you have immediate access to a variety of menu's, each of which is represented by a different icon, but is easily scrollable. Again the background is a certain color depending on the month, but hopefully sony will be kind enough to let us have a user defined wallpaper at a later date (PLEASE!!!!!). The menu are very user friendly and quite logical. Screen I seem to have been quite fortunate and not recieved a unit with bad pixels. I have left my screen on its factory settings and the luminocity is very bright, hell I can use it as a flashlight and it is much brighter than my DS is. The images come out very crystal clear and sharp, i can't wait to get a good video to watch on this. The screen does look like it could scratch easily even though it is quite thick (Think original game boy screens, but more glossy and a loy harder) I did buy two types of screen protectors, the first of which was a privacy screen, which if you can stay away from since all it does is make the refresh of the screen more visable, and the second which was just a screen guard. It fit on quite nicely after i pushed the airbubles out and seems to be doing its job, but then again its not as if I have been testing it Controls I did notice the buttons are fairly squeeky, especially the up and right of the controls, but the sound has diminished after use...so it must have just been the system settling in. I seem to be fortunate to have no bad pixels in my display as well as not having the loose umd drawer. The unit seems to fit natually in to my hands, but my fingers slightly cover up the external speakers when playing ridge racers, but the sound still comes through crisp and clear. Anyway, if you are used to a PS controller then these will be quite natural for you, except for the analog stick which for me is just a little too user unfriendly (but then again, I've always prefered the d-pad controls) because of its small size and akward position too near the botton of the unit (makes your grip on the unit unbalanced) Also fingerprints show up on thsi unit amazingly easy! Sound The sounds from the unit, especially RR seem crystal clear (have not tried the head phones yet though), aside from the slight problem mentioned above. The unit comes with an auto volume system, that keeps teh volume at about half the system max. This level is just fine for most situations, and any place you are that you need it louder, you should probably be wearing the headphones. Connectivity This is very straightforward. There is a USB slot at the top of the unit and when you plug it in and attach it to your computer, the computer (with XP) recignizes it as a drive and makes it accessable. You can also connect via WLAN, but i have not played with that ability too much yet...more on that later... Memory Card As I mentioned in another post, the card is small in size but just fine for game saves. Anything else, seriously think about getting a bigger card. The PSP formates the card and lays down the basic file structure, sans video, which can be added later, but to a different directory (where as under the main PSP directory would have been more logical, but this was not done so as to remain compatable with other products) Battery Unfortunately I have not had ample time to test this out (been busy working, planning a wedding, getting ready for a baby), and no one that I know has a PSP for me to test it out using the LAN capabilities. The initial charge lasted about 2 hours of me playing lumines, a fairly low processer using game, but also thus far as lasted me 2 hours playing RR (and teh current battery still shows 2 bars remaining) I will put the battery (and the spare) through its paces when I make my Tokyo to New Mexico trip next week and I will give you more details about battery life then. Games As of right now, I only have two games - Ridge Racer and Lumines (no Golf, as I don't really like golf games). I will be getting Metal Gear Acid tomorrow so I can include that tomorrow with the pictures I plan to include... UMD In many ways, the design of these discs is fairly stupid. Why would you make a disc encloded in plastic only to leave a small square expose don the back that can be scratched? The should have made ir more like a floppy disc to offer some protection as carrying these discs without some sort of protective case could be bad for the discs. When the discs load, the is some noise from the machine during the begining of a disc read (read battery draining), but the system quiets down quite fast as the game loads. Load times are different per game, but the waits are not intolerable and when you see the graphics, definately not a bad wait.... Ridge Racers This game is simply amazing. The opening movie graphics look as if they are off a PS2. My jaw literally dropped watching the sequence. As for the game itself, if you player Ridge Racer V (or whatever was the one that came out when the PS2 was first released), the graphics and game play are quite similar. I am still just amazed that a game can look this good on a handheld. The screenshots you have seen do not lie... The only bad point so far is that many of the courses have too many similarities in them and the cars seem to handle the same for the most part, even though their specs are different...but the music is fairly good! Lumines In many ways this is a tetris clone, but with enough differences to set it apart and let it make its own niche. The game play is quite simple, make sqaures of the same color to make them go away while listening to different tunes and changing backgrounds. There are also a few different modes and as you play through them, you can unlook some more screens and songs. This was definately a must buy at launch! This is the game I have played the most of since owning the system... Overall impressions Having bought this and my DS at the same time, i must say I have spend more time with the PSP. While I love Mario DS I have just found myself playing lumines and RR more just to see the graphics. I will be taking both on my trip to the states so I will give you a review on usage during travel...Both units definately have their pros and cons but for now I give the PSP the nod until more software comes out for both... Well lets see what else could I write? What do you want pictures of??? I'm not sure but if you have any questions, please ask here or in a pm. Hopefully tomorrow I can post pictures and a quick review of Metal Gear as well as any requested pictures. Let me know what you want and I'm happy to help out! edit:sorry i didn't edit the previous post, but my time expired to edit it :pinch:

Dazzla Veteran Posted December 16, 2004 Author Veteran Share Posted December 16, 2004 Man, my PSP shipped today, looks like I'll have it before Xmas. I'm kinda wishing I ordered Minna No Golf and/or Lumines as well as Ridge but I was uncertain at the language barrier. Just bought a 512MB Memory Stick Duo Pro (MagicGate) as well: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...3859873240&rd=1 Time to start encoding some movies for PSP playback... ~clean
Word on Downloadable content for psp over at computerandvideogames.com UK Studio Traveller's Tales, who are working on a Formula One game for PSP, revealed to 1up that you'll be able to connect your PSP to the internet through a hub, download data for an F1 race and start with the same grid as your real-life F1 counterparts (so Schumacher out front then). The word is that Sony are also considering downloadable content for Fired Up, WRC and WipEout Pure, which have all just been confirmed for the PSP.Colin Berry, who works as a designer on the PSP's WipEout, seemed to confirm this saying that: "Players are going to be able to download new tracks to race, new ships, new skins for the front-end and new music tracks as well. This is a feature that is unique in the PSP and allows for a new delivery method for content, adding extra value after launch for its titles." Dazzla Veteran Posted December 16, 2004 Author Veteran Share Posted December 16, 2004 Wow, sounds cool! I like the idea of downloading race stats after qualifying in F1 games. One thing that I do want with WipEout Pure is the ability for custom soundtracks from MP3's on the Memory Stick. That's just so damn cool!
