AIM IM Window Resizing

Question

I have AOL's Instant Messenger version 5.9.3702 with AIM Ad-Hack 4.02 installed, and everything has been working well....so far:

I have a problem with the IM windows, when created - the 'typing' area is way too big, and I always have to resize this when a new window is created. Is there a way to store a default configuration of the window? The overall size of the window is fine, and it remember this.....but how can I set the typing space to be smaller than the message history space?

This illustrates what I DONT want, but appears to be the default:

Here's how the window appears after I manually resize it every time, and how I want it to be by default:

Is anyone familiar with the file responsible for default window sizes in AIM? And please, I have considered (and tried) Miranda, Trillian, etc etc....all of which perform better in this area, but still lack a lot of features that AIM does nicely. Thanks in advance!

What features do you want that AIM is the only program that can do them nicely? Trillian and Gaim can do pretty much everything AIM can, but are harder to use.

To solve your problem, have you tried using an addon that allows for tabbed IMs? Maybe having them in one window will let it memorize the setting.

Thats a good idea, can you point me in the direction of such an add-in?

As far as my dislike for Gaim/Trillian/Miranda, I could go on all day. I have used each for at least a few days, but theres always something that brings me back to good 'ol AIM. Gaim was a bit resource-heavy, and it was clunky in the user interface. Trillian was also resource heavy, and took too long to load up my buddy list. Miranda was the one I liked the best, as it was very slim and has plenty of add-in modules available, but I don't have time to endlessly configure it to mimic AIM (user typing notification didn't show up on my end, could not transfer files, cumbersome to check buddy info, etc.). Maybe a while down the road one of these programs will have matured into something I like, but for now AIM does everything I need it to. Except for the window resizing, of course.

For tabbing, DeadAIM version 3 is free here: http://www.oldversion.com/program.php?n=deadaim

If you want a newer version, you will have to pay $5. The newer version just adds a few new features, but version 3 is available for free (since it was before he decided to charge for it).

I agree with you for the most part about alternative AIM clients. I used to use AIM with DeadAIM until one day it just refused to work at all, even with install, so I was forced to use something else. Trillian is very slow to load and bulky, so I chose Gaim. The interface still needs work and it does have some bugs, but it's my favorite client. With some more work, it will be better.
