I was wondering if u can notice a speed difference between 512 Kb DSL versus a cable modem... obviously it won't be as fast but is it really noticable specifically in gaming... like CS, Jedi Knight II, QIII, the like...

I know cable speed varies with the number of users... I just want to know on average.

The reason I'm asking is my mom is really touchy about spending so much on internet service... and cable is $55/month plus the cost of $50 for installation whereas sprint DSL has a free self-install option with a special where they'll waive the activation plus give u either a DVD player or web cam. DSL is also $50/month, $5 cheaper

Lets see, on a dual DSL setup with 2 routers, I could at best hit around 500kbps, and had major problems gaming and not to mention that the major DSL providers are in a constant state of going bankrupt or being sold off. In one year my contract was moved through 4 different ISP's, just because companies were shuffled around.

Now I have cable through Time Warner. Its cheaper, I hit 3700+kbps (although they only gaurantee 2000) and my line has only dropped once in 6 months, due to a fire at one of there relay stations. Service is next day, and my upload hits around 500kbps...I can literally download many gigs of data per day...if I can just find the HD space!

So cable is the winner IMHO.

Based on the cable internet I'm using, the cable is uncapped download speed, capped upload speed, better pings in online games

The only drawback is that the cable connection is shared between users in the area. If all users download, I will get slower transfer rate.

Really? Here ADSL is MORE expensive than Cable. Hence, Cable have better speed rate, mostly uncapped download. ADSL is new technology here, that is why the price is higher.

DSL all the way

In that case, yes ADSL is not shared. Instead we'll get our own uninterrupted connection. And yes, it uses the phone socket just to be connected. Yeah ADSL is wonderful.

I live Champaign, IL and DSL is a little cheaper then cable per month. ($45 vs $55) I personally have cable broadband. At the worst time of the day- 5:30PM- I still get 1300kps. I have gotten as high as 3150kps. On the average, I do at least as well as a T1 and usually better. The downside is that uploads are capped at 256kps.
