xEonBuRn
I was wondering if u can notice a speed difference between 512 Kb DSL versus a cable modem... obviously it won't be as fast but is it really noticable specifically in gaming... like CS, Jedi Knight II, QIII, the like... I know cable speed varies with the number of users... I just want to know on average. The reason I'm asking is my mom is really touchy about spending so much on internet service... and cable is $55/month plus the cost of $50 for installation whereas sprint DSL has a free self-install option with a special where they'll waive the activation plus give u either a DVD player or web cam. DSL is also $50/month, $5 cheaper Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/27613-dsl-vs-cable/ Share on other sites
Faction
In general, if your cable is uncapped, it is better for downloading, but DSL is better for gaming. Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/27613-dsl-vs-cable/#findComment-249437 Share on other sites

bayrider
i've used both... i noticed cable was faster most of the time, but DSL was more consistent... im not gonna place a vote cause i say 50/50, its all up to the person using it i guess Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/27613-dsl-vs-cable/#findComment-249445 Share on other sites

Lomex
Ask them if you can have a month free trial... From my experience it all depends where you really live... At one part of the city DSL was faster, then I moved, and now Cable is better... I say try to try it out. Guest deadzombie
Lets see, on a dual DSL setup with 2 routers, I could at best hit around 500kbps, and had major problems gaming and not to mention that the major DSL providers are in a constant state of going bankrupt or being sold off. In one year my contract was moved through 4 different ISP's, just because companies were shuffled around. Now I have cable through Time Warner. Its cheaper, I hit 3700+kbps (although they only gaurantee 2000) and my line has only dropped once in 6 months, due to a fire at one of there relay stations. Service is next day, and my upload hits around 500kbps...I can literally download many gigs of data per day...if I can just find the HD space! So cable is the winner IMHO. mariusu
it also depends on the interleaving protocol level, your provider uses (dsl)....a higher interleaving level gives bad pings in games....not good for gamers, but more error correction for data transfer and browsing.... liar2
i think it depends on how far you live from the server (dsl). cable is really nice. but no matter what, it will always depend on the provider. altezza Veteran Posted May 18, 2002 Veteran Share Posted May 18, 2002 Based on the cable internet I'm using, the cable is uncapped download speed, capped upload speed, better pings in online games The only drawback is that the cable connection is shared between users in the area. If all users download, I will get slower transfer rate. Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/27613-dsl-vs-cable/#findComment-249724 Share on other sites
freeza
DSL is better here since cable is more expensive and you get gay packages like 768/128 for 70/mo. Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/27613-dsl-vs-cable/#findComment-249726 Share on other sites

Really? Here ADSL is MORE expensive than Cable. Hence, Cable have better speed rate, mostly uncapped download. ADSL is new technology here, that is why the price is higher. JnCoKiLLa
DSL is the best for gaming and DLing just because you don't gotta share the connection with your neborhood its 100% just you and no one else......unlike cable DSL all the way Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/27613-dsl-vs-cable/#findComment-249735 Share on other sites

Instead we'll get our own uninterrupted connection. And yes, it uses the phone socket just to be connected. Yeah ADSL is wonderful. Guest deadzombie
Local price on uncapped fiber optic cable 2000kbps gauranteed= $40.00 month. Local price on ADSL (price checked)512kbps max= $372.00 month Need I say more? (My next post is #1000 - whatever should I post about?) amoeba
Where I live, we can get Cable or DSL. The problem is that the DSL company sucks. It is really hard to deal with and just an overall pain in the neck. On the other hand, the Cable company is superb. They have zero downtime and offer great service. I go with Cable just because of where I live. Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/27613-dsl-vs-cable/#findComment-251051 Share on other sites
linux2
I live Champaign, IL and DSL is a little cheaper then cable per month. ($45 vs $55) I personally have cable broadband. At the worst time of the day- 5:30PM- I still get 1300kps. I have gotten as high as 3150kps. On the average, I do at least as well as a T1 and usually better. The downside is that uploads are capped at 256kps. Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/27613-dsl-vs-cable/#findComment-251082 Share on other sites
