Sean B. U.S. researchers have mapped the structure of a rare human antibody that could neutralize the human immunodeficiency virus, the organism that causes AIDS. The body makes many neutralizing antibodies -- proteins that are produced by the immune system -- against HIV. For various reasons, however, most are unable to neutralize the virus. Still, the immune systems of some HIV patients have been able to produce antibodies that are more effective than others. Researchers at the Scripps Research Institute and several other institutions have found the structure of one such antibody, called 4E10, which targets a protein called GP41 that exists on the surface of HIV. The virus uses GP41 to glue its membrane to the cell it is infecting. Because 4E10 attacks the virus before it enters cells, it can prevent HIV infection if it is present in the bloodstream prior to exposure to the virus. An HIV vaccine would seek to use 4E10 just as existing vaccines against diseases use neutralizing antibodies. The researchers also found through 4E10 the target area on the HIV surface where a vaccine might work effectively. "This antibody is very broadly active," said Dennis Burton, who led the research. "It neutralized nearly 100 different viral strains of HIV from all over the world. <URL Removed> fred666: Please link directly to the source: http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/news/fullstory_23153.html All I have to say, WOOOOHOOOOO Edited March 1, 2005 by fred666 Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/290494-scientists-map-rare-hiv-antibody/ Share on other sites

Rob2687
Not really a cure.... If you look at the original title of the article "Scientists map rare HIV antibody" It can be used to prevent it before exposure to the virus, but it won't cure you of it ;) Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/290494-scientists-map-rare-hiv-antibody/#findComment-585538303 Share on other sites

Maybe you can't save the current people with the disease, but you'll be saving all the future generations... The journey isn't over....but it's a step in the right direction. Hupp
This would be great, innoculation would be great and in a persons life time you would see the end of the disease atleast as we know of it today. L3thal Veteran Posted February 27, 2005 Veteran Share Posted February 27, 2005 HIV will never be cured. Whenever something seems to work, HIV tends to change itself and makes the antiviral vaccine useless. HIV is here to stay with us, unfortunately. It's no surprise why we haven't created medicine for it, its because we cannot kill it or control it. Hupp
Atleast HIV is a preventable disease and more the own persons fault then something that can be transmitted through the air. Evolution
its all conspiracy.. aids was created to kill off black people.. a cure will never be found.. or maybe it will and something worse will be created. 585556094[/snapback] ...alright. While there are two theories behind the origin, OPV and hunter theory, there is not any legitamate evidence to support the OPV hypothesis. Science is about evidence, not conspiracies, and definitely not a witch hunt. Right now, the only way to prevent HIV from spreading, is to prevent those with it to stop procreating... it may be cruel, but it's also cruel to give such a virus to a child. There isn't a cure yet, but to say that it's a conspiracy to kill off black people is highly offensive to everyone else, casting blame on individuals whose ancestors were involved in Britain etc. So is cancer a conspiracy also, or perhaps the other array of deadly diseases?
