The word soccer does not come from the United States but was a term used by public school and university students, most notably at Oxford, in the 19th Century to shorten the new game ?Association Football?. I hope I don't get in trouble for this, but the anti-Americanism that's going on in this thread is VERY offensive to me. Just in case anyone gives a rats behind. I could say negative things about soccer (some call Football) and put a :x after it too, but I'm respectful. Please do the same for others and we can all get along just fine here.
