i read from another forum that if you installed pirated copy of xp and sp2 and microsoft finds your key to be "bad" when you update it, "it will write to your boot sector causing your pc to be unable to boot up windows or dos."

can autopatcher xp be used to update a pirated copy of xp safely?

We have to wait how and when Microsoft is going to do this, IF they going to do this......

This check can only be done on-line. Using WUS OR SUS.....

If they are going to bulit-in a (PID) check for each update and patch it will have an impact on AutoPatcher to....we are using the original sources!! That means that they are from Microsoft.

That's absurd. If you're using a key that Microsoft has determined to be illegally acquired, you simply won't be able to install updates. (I'm not even sure if it checks for each update, probably only the service packs)

If you've installed updates with an illegal key, the only thing you have to fear is the inability to install future updates. You should, of course, buy Windows. It is worth it.

Hi. congratulations for this awesome work !!

Only a cosmetical question:

- exist others ( easy ways ) ways to replace ugly bitmaps to "log off" & "turn off" buttons from XP start menu ?

This nice feature is no loger more aviable on AutoPatcherXP.

I found only "by hand" way: from VirtualPlastic, replacing bitmap resources Explorer.exe: Bitmap #7010/7011.

And this changes will be done using Resource Hacker.

Thanks.

No, I mean the New XP Start Menu, the "log off" & "turn off" bitmap buttons.

I ask for a quick and more easy method for change this bitmaps.

Thanks

Looking at the graphics I only see a color difference. Is that what you are talking about? The color??

How did you get the nicer looking images to show on the classic windows view? I tried the ResHack but the same old crappy looking ones still showed up.

I export 32x32 @ 256 colors icons bitmaps with GConvert tool, from shell32.dll.

Later I export the originals bitmap #7010/7011, from explorer.exe using ResHack.

Then I edit this last bitmap with the new ones from shell32.dll.

Finally I put back this edited bitmap to explorer.exe with ReasHack.

You must work with a copy of explorer.exe. Later you can interchange the original explorer.exe with the copy.

In that image you attached with those bitmaps, I found a new better looking icon of the one icon you didn't change in the picture. The one that is an arrow pointing up. Go in ResHack, open Shell32.dll and look under 1447 in "Icons".

Where can I get a list of the tweaks and what they are supposed to do? Also, how can I uninstall a particular tweak? :)

At this moment no list of tweaks available. In AutoPatcher you can select the tweak and Hit the button "Module Details" to get more information about.

I'm working on the list and also a user friendly description about the tweaks and images to show you all what it does.

For uninstalling one or more tweaks you have to use the tool "Tweak Undo" located in the directory \tools from AutoPatchers directory!

Changing items like this requires altering a DLL, which I'm pretty sure AP doesn't currently have the ability to do. I'm also pretty sure the AP team wouldn't want to start venturing into it. Messing with DLLs, especially ones as important as shell32.dll isn't a good idea unless you really know what you're doing. Keeping the tweaks specific to the registry is probably the safest way to go.

^ More or less true. Well, I had applied the 256 color system tray icon tweak on a win2k explorer.exe some time ago (someone was asking for it because after he applied AP2k it changed his explorer.exe), but other than that, I don't like messing with files.

I found the directory "Tweak Undo" .....C:\Program Files\AutoPatcher\tools\tweakundo.

So what do I do next? Doubleclick on any undo I want to implement?

no, that wont work, the files are encrypted so they wont do anything, just like a corrupted file.

You need to run the tweakundo tool in C:\Program Files\AutoPatcher\Tools. itll list the undo files and allow you to run them.

I take it you are the guru. I am new to Autopatcher, did read the faq's, and please correct me if I am wrong or please explain, many thanks.

I was never worried about the MS updates and this forum was an eye opener.

1.) Does Autopatcher already include some updates? Which ones /what for ?

2.) Why the latest Autopatcher hasn't got all the current known updates on it? (up to the release date)

3.) I do not like MS XP SP2 because is slowing down my PC, does not recognise basic stuff like Norton installed on the machine etc and trys to take over my PC....who knows what MS does send and ask from my machine....If I use Autopatcher on SP1, will this take all the critical security updates including those from SP2 - excluding the SP2 interface and it's bugs ?

Again, Many thanks !!!

P.S. I find it a big joke SP2 because it has a patch,....SO we have an OS with 2 patches and a patch for the second patch!......I mean, only government departments used to be this "good"....

Well, it's time to switch to bilingual talk here :D

First in dutch:

Ook hallo.

Niks nieuws op dit gebied, afwachten dus!

Now in English:

Also hi.

Nothing new about this topic, just have to wait!

Looks like a teacher here :p

1) AutoPatcher includes every update from SP2 RTM through to the release date of the latest XPXP.

2) see 1

3) SP2 is the only way to go if you wish to keep your computer secure, MS is not providing any SP1-only patches anymore (If I remember correctly) because there is no need to, SP2 is a patch, not an upgrade.

As for it not recognising software, most, if not all, programs that had problems with XPSP2 have had vendor update... Norton does work on SP2, and has done since about 3 weeks after the SP2 RTM.

As for your question about Autopatcher putting SP2-only fixes on top of an SP1 machine - no. It does not and can not do this!

The only way to obtain the fixes contained in the SP2-only patches is to get SP2. Or stop using Windows.

However, some patches for SP2 can be applied to SP1 as well (but not all). These patches will be installed on your SP1 machine, but you're better off downloading them from WU/MU than autopatcher, because of the filesizes involved.
