Open up a new tab and type in about:config in the address bar. All of Firefox's settings will now be listed. Copy the following to the filter box: browser.tabs.showSingleWindowModePrefs. Now you should only see one setting listed. Right click on the item, and click on Toggle on the menu that comes up.

You will now have a couple of new settings in your Firefox Options window, which you can get to by opening up the Options window, by selecting Options... from the Tools menu. Once you have the Options window open, go to the Advanced section and expand the Tabbed Browsing settings. Under Tabbed Browsing, check Force links that open new windows to open in: and select either the same tab/window as the link or a new tab, depending on what your preference is.

Hope that helps. It's a bit lengthy, but every step should be covered. Good luck. (Y)

Note: This was disabled by the Firefox dev team because of "problems we were experiencing with it" and they warn that you should enable this "at your own risk - there may be crashes".

The best way I've found to do it is this:

in your address bar go to about:config

in filter enter "single"

double click "browser.tabs.showSingleWindowModePrefs" to change it to 'true'

now in filter enter: "browser.link.open"

external should be set to 3

newwindow should be set to 3

and newwindow.restriction should be set to 2

This stops new windows opening unless they are links that should open in windows, such as the videos on gamespot.com.

the best way is middle click it will keep focus on the current tab, and i know thier is a way to restore the session as firefox on my wife's notebook does that but i cant remember how to do that right now.

Making FireFox Open in a tab instead of a Window

Yeah, FireFox claims to have tabbed-windows, BUT THEY DO NOT. You have to do all this tweaking installing, extensions and plugins. Ridiculous!

M a x t h o n comes perfect straight out of the box! Plus, you have to download a bazillion extensions to get the same stuff Maxthon has originaly. Firefox SUCKS compared to Maxthon!

Not true. Until you verify your statement with a real-world demo, you're just speaking out of your ass. Don't troll.

go to the firefox extension page and download the "tabbrowser preferences" extension. it's really easy and simple to use, u don't need about:config to do what u want
