Google plans to double Gmail capacity

well if you think about it - they try to ensure people use their "archive" so i imagine when they go into the archive they are compressed locally on their server...would make sense...cause text will compress ALOT so in theory their 1Gb of space is maybe only compressed 300Mb [just throwin numbers around nothing exact!]

Thats my thoughts on it anyways :D

Well I wonder what the ratio of people actually just saving text to people saving more than text? :ermm:

also a good point you bring up Stat...espically with people using their virutal drives etc...but then again they can only have 10Mb MAX so perhaps Google just have huge SAN Clusters...eitherway I like having that much space regardless if I use it or not :D

Well the way i thought it worked was that one attachment could only be 10MB.. that doesnt stop people from backing something up and splitting up into several 10MB pieces..

Dont have the time to read the whole thread, so I dont know if anyone has mentioned this yet....

April fools?

Yup, thats true, i thought yeh this is true last year :pinch:

I have a fair gues at how they manage to do this increase of email capacity. Not all users use all the space at the same time, so they don't actually need to have that much space on their servers. I use 100mb and the rest is unused and their servers can store somebody elses mail in that space. When I get more mail, they just store that on their servers and tell me I have that much less free space on my account. It's like... banks and insurance companies. If we all took all our money out of a bank they'd go bankrupt. Same here, if we all use our 1Gb of space they'd run out of space pretty soon. So I gues they were testing Gmail for a year to see users habits and now they see that they can increase the size of the accounts.

Either that or it's a April 1st joke :)

Hmm right now my Gmail says I have 1031 MB... didn't it used to say 1000 MB?

Yes, I just noticed mine's gone up too!

Edit: This seems random. I have another account, one which I almost never use, and it's gone up to 1281MB!
