The Official Mac OS X "Tiger" Thread

Recommended Posts

Sorry for the third post, But i just noticed that with Tiger if you change the screen brightness down when under battery power, it reverts to your previous setting when you plug it back in, then back to the dimmer setting when you unplug!

Well good, don't remember Panther doing this.

Have had Tiger for almost a week now, and am still discovering all its little details.

Dougal.

Yea, I love that feature too!

P.S., your signature says "OS X Panther 10.4.0 (GM)". Should that not be Tiger? :p

Use the inspector option

OK, thanks. And for those that don't know how to access it, you have to hold down the "option" key when ctrl-clicking on the files. I had seen that, but didn't know what it did.

Or another option, hold ctrl down after you select the files and use the "Get Summary Info" option

wow aslong as you know the name of what you need to open, inspector is the most badass thing ever.

Well...looks like Info lets you add comments to a file that you can search for in Spotlight

I'm gonna get my iMac after panther (and the revision) comes out. How will i get my iTunes (for windows) library into iTunes on the Mac. arnt' the file names all Windows ones (C:/docs&settigns etc.)? I REALLY don't want to lose my play counts...

Let iTunes organize your music and then copy the iTunes folder from you peecee to ~/Music on OS X.

Tiger has lost the ability to select multiple files and Get Info. I tried to do it just then and a heap of windows (Info windows) opened up. Is there a way to get the size of multiple folders/files when selected, in Tiger?

CMD-Click your selection but keep CMD down .. you will notice that Get Info is Get Summary when the CMD button is down .. let go and it'll go back to Get Info .. very cool

Well replacing the App files doesn't seem to work either, how do I reinstall QuickTime 7 completely including it's frameworks etc. without having to drag file by file to my System folder?

Install the quicktime.pkg file from the tiger cd. Its probably hidden, but its there.

what is the difference between get info and show inspector?? they seem to provide identical information

Select multiple files at once and see what happens. Get Info will now open a window for each file, Inspector will open a single window with the information on the whole group (like Get Info used to). Inspector seems to show less information though. Here's a screenshot of the Inspector window and the Get Info windows for a group of folders on my drive:

quicktime pro should really be free when you get it through the OS

Yup. It's insane to force some piece of software into a system without the full features enabled. Luckily I somehow stumbled across a weird number/letter combo that had the strange property to enable those menu items that once had a [PRO] label in front of them.

do you guys really use quicktime that extensively? besides watching files online, i've never found myself resorting to quicktime after using vlc.

out of curiosity, is there something that quicktime can do that vlc can't? (from a general user's point of view...not developing HD quality stuff)
