After a year of unemployment and a year of prison

Thanks a lot everyone. I really appreciate all the support that you've given me through this. I do have some hope for finding a job soon. I received a couple of responses to two other jobs that I had applied for prior to this, and I'll be checking in to them tomorrow. Hopefully one of them will have a more positive outcome.

That's the spirit. This is the first thread I've actually read entirely, all 27 pages. I have to say, for what it's worth, even though you didn't get the job this time, you'll do on the future, that I can assure you. Also, this thread has actually opened my eyes to what the consequences of illegal software and the like, so I thank you deeply for it.

You are a good man from what I can see, keep your head up, and enjoy these times with your loved ones.

In every cloud is a silver lining :D

Shame about the decision :( But there are other jobs out there that you can still have a decent crack at, including those two you've heard from (who knows, maybe someone who works at either place is a Neowin reader ;))

If you think we're gonna let you off lightly though, you've got another thing coming - This topic is staying up until you get a job! :D

i stopped reading this thread on page 10, but i get the jist of whats happened (i think!)

Sorry to hear you didnt get the job....but good luck in any future interviews you get.

I have never heard of razor 1911 before as im not really into pc gaming, i know this may sound wrong but i think doing what you (razor 1911) did was pretty amazing.

"the hole" sounds really bad and im sorry to hear you had to go through that kind of treatment.

It would be really great to see you write a book and i would definately read it...and buy it, not download it.

Good luck in your future life and its great to see you looking at things so positively after what you've been through.

Cheers for sharing.

Alex

Wow this thread has certainly taken off. Mate you should come work here in Australia, plenty of work! Everyone here are just doll bludges (not me:P), so could score a job without any probs.

Good luck with everything anyway.

Believe me, if I weren't married and didn't have my family all close by, I'd pack up and move somewhere, anywhere, just to get a new start. Australia, New Zeland, yeah, I could handle that I think. ;)

Good luck man (Y)

The man himself. Thank you sir.

Thank you. I hope that by telling my story everyone can take a step back and look at the big picture and maybe get a different perspective on things. Maybe it'll help keep someone else from going through what I've gone through.

i just read all your posts from page 1 to 28, and damn quite an interesting read! quite unfortunate how it ended though. Much luck in your endeavours. I'm sure that someone will take notice of the amount of courage you must have to bear such a harsh punishment and still come out doing all that you can to provide for your family. Again, a lot of luck to you, and keep bumping this thread with updates. :p

Whew, it's been a hectic week, which is a drastic change from what my life has been like since I got home. I have a friend, heffe2001 on here, who works as the Network/Systems Admin for a local company. He also does contract IT work on the side. He had some scheduling confilcts and a customer that had a server going dead, so he threw the job to me. He also had another contract job that he brought me in on that we split. So, I've billed about 14 hours this week, which may not sound like a lot, but it's a great deal better than nothing. It felt really good to be working, and it was a lot of fun too. I have really missed getting out there every day. Not to mention the income. It'll be nice to actually be able to pay a bill on my own, out of money that I earned, for a change. Plus, I finally have something to list in the Monthly Income field on my monthly probation report. :p Thanks Hef, I really appreciate it.

*sigh*

Well, this is a post that I didn't want to make, and I've been sitting here chewing on it for an hour or so. A little over an hour ago I got a call from the HR department of the company that I interviewed with. They have offered the position to someone else. They gave me the usual line about keeping my information and considering me for any future openings.

I don't know what else to say right now, other than I am extremely thankful to all of you for your kind words and support. When I started this thread, the intention was merely to express my happiness and excitement in finally having the opportunity to possibly rejoin the workforce and resume my life. Now it seems that my hopes have once again been crushed. There's nothing I can do about it though, just keep plugging along, sending out resumes and filling out applications. Thank you all again, Neowin is truly a great community.

Thanks for sharing. Just don't lose hope :)

I just thought I'd give you all an update on my situation. I'm continuing to get a little contract work, which I'm very thankful for. I may have an interview coming up for an IT position with one of the semi-local (about an hour away) school systems. The parents of that same friend who has been trying to get me the job before, both worked and retired from the school system and they know both the Superintendent and the head of HR. They've put in a good word for me, and I'm hoping to hear something from them soon. Thank you all again for being so kind and supportive.

Whilst I am against the theft element of copyright violation (people selling copied games and movies, or downloading a great game and completing it but never buying etc) , I have no problem with using the "unofficial" route to evaluate a game, app or DVD before making a purchase and in this regard I support the release groups in what they do. This way the few games I buy I really play, the few apps I buy are exactly what I need so the good developers are rewarded and the bad get nothing- everyone gets what they deserve...except for those like Shane who make it possible and end up in prison.

So my thanks to the scene for giving me the ability to evaluate games and spend my money wisely - it's just sad that people like Shane had to pay such a (disproportionate when compared to rapists and financial fraudsters) penalty. Good luck with life as it goes on.

The very best of luck to you again. (Y)

If you think about it, Shane is a bit like Jesus. He took the fall for all our sins

585969388[/snapback]

Nah :p He took a fall for his own sins, but to keep the jesus analogy running :p the punishment really did not fit the crime at all. Maybe a few weeks/months doing community service (or the american equivalent.) But prison? That's nothing short of ridiculous and really removes any ability to (fully) support law and lawmakers.

Followed this thread since day one;

Congratulations on keeping your head up and working hard to get another job when the first fell through. Just keep at it and you'll end up fine in the end.

Best of luck.

Every Post.

Hey I read all your posts and you sound cool.

I read that page you linked to early on a while ago, and I also read about other people arrested that were in the warez scene. I have only seen one other person post about it on a message board though, but I can't remember what crew he was from... he had just gotten back from prison though.

I've got some questions for you:

1. Were you really paranoid of getting caught when you were in the scene?

2. Did any of your family know?

3. Do you think the feds/ISP are monitoring your connection or have you flagged?

1: I was never really paranoid about getting caught. Everyone that I associated with, I knew pretty well, and they had been involved for many many years, just as I had. I was cautious, we all were, however, just like anything else, you become complacent. I didn't cover my tracks as well as I used to, didn't take precautions that I had taken before, and in the end, that's how I got caught.

2: My family knew what I was doing, to a certain extent. They knew that I could get any movie they wanted to see, or CD they wanted. None of my family is big in to computers, so software really means nothing to them, other than they knew that whatever they needed, I had it. I don't think they had any idea just how involved I was, no.

3: I don't know. I'm not going to be paranoid about it though. I don't download anything these days, save for a few linux distros here and there, an occasional beta off of BetaNews.com or something like that. If they're watching me now, they must be bored to tears.

HAHAHAH  how true how true
