I looked around and the maker doesn't know either. Someone commented in his deviantart page the following:

"The center character is "onna" :: woman. On the right, from the top down, they read "otoko" :: man, "hikari" :: light, "sora" :: sky."

So apparently they are Chinese characters.

Well the Japanese originally came from China, so they do use a lot of Chinese characters still. Just looking at the wallpaper though, I would have assumed that it was Chinese, not Japanese. Sorry I can't translate the other two characters for you in Chinese. I've only lived here for a year, and I only know very, very basic Chinese.
