"The Quiet Man" John Ruiz has become the first man to lose his heavyweight title to two different former middleweight champions.

Hey solored, this statement has got to strike your funny bone. Made me laugh out loud.

Toney may not turn out to be the undisputed Heavyweight champ out there, but boy, he sure did us fans a huge favor on Saturday by ridding the division of a truly stale fighter.

Amen to that, brother, I don't think I could take another Ruiz clinch-fest. Somebody's gotta step up in that division and clean house and collect all those belts. I can't even say I see hope on the horizon yet for the heavyweights, but Lights Out got the job done nicely, I watched the fight and you gotta give him credit, he's only about 5'9"! :)

Boxing has been and continues to become irrelevant.

To whom? There are still tons of fans that have been purchasing PPV events. Heavyweights is definately not the division to watch but look at the lightweights coming up this Saturday on SHO. Corrales/Castillo, thats a damn good matchup.

Irrelevant? pfft.

I'm pretty sure the Garden was just over half full for the fight between Ruiz and Toney. Look I like a good match as much as the next guy but between PPV costs being ridiculously high and the lack of charismatic fighters the average Joe simply doesn't care about it anymore. I'm sure there are some serious die-hards, like yourself, and good for you, but I think for the average sports fan boxing doesn't really matter that much anymore.

...I could almost agree with you. Boxing could use one charismatic heavyweight and one less Don King and there would be a swift return to the glory days. :)

...but like digipoi said about the lightweights, if you're not watching non-Heavyweight bouts these days, you really are missing the great fights. I think Trinidad Wright will be a big draw for boxing. :)

PPV costs are definitely high and it can put a hurt on my pocket. Although, most PPV fights Ive watched have been well worth the money, but thats to me.

Guess I dont watch average sports, I dunno.

Ruiz: I want my belt back!

QUIET MAN DECIDES NOT TO RETIRE

Former two-time World Boxing Association heavyweight champion John "The Quietman" Ruiz announced today that, after speaking with his family and management team, he has reconsidered his decision to retire and will continue fighting. Ruiz retired April 30 immediately after losing a 12-round decision to James "Lights Out" Toney at Madison Square Garden. "My emotional decision, coming right after losing a fight I felt I won, was premature," Ruiz explained. "I was tired of all the criticism and felt everybody was against me. After reviewing the tape and talking it over with my advisors, I decided that I don't want to go out that way. If they want me out of the sport, they're going to have to knock me out. I'm back. "I want my WBA belt back. I still feel that I'm the best heavyweight in the world and I'm willing to fight any of the top heavyweights."

Pfft! whatever.

REPORT: Toney tested positive!

Newly crowned WBA heavyweight champion James Toney has reportedly tested positive for an anabolic steroid in a post-fight drug test. According to longtime boxing writer Wallace Matthews of Newsday, Toney's promoter Dan Goossen was informed Monday night by the New York State Athletic Commission that Toney had "tested positive for a banned substance that is not a narcotic." The paper quotes another source as saying the substance was nandrolone. If this report is accurate, the bout would be declared a no contest, and John Ruiz, who came out of retirement yesterday, would stand to regain his former WBA crown. Toney's attorney Nicholas Kahn suggested that Toney may have been prescribed something he didn't know was illegal by his personal physician. Stay tuned.

Oh you got to be fuggin kidding me. Tell me Im having a nightmare.

TONEY SUSPENDED; FINED!

By Lisa Scott and Andre Courtemanche

According to the Fight Fax web site?s suspension list, James ?Lights Out? Toney has been suspended for 90 days and fined $10,000 for testing positive for a banned substance. In addition, and perhaps more importantly, his April 30 WBA title-winning victory over John Ruiz has been changed to a No Decision. While the implications of this decision are not known, the most likely scenario will see the title returned to Ruiz outright. Toney will apparently be re-tested after his 90-day suspension is served.

Toney issues statement.

BREAKING NEWS

Toney Camp Issues Statement

By Lisa Scott and Andre Courtemanche

The following press release has been issued by representatives of WBA Heavyweight Champion James Toney regarding the rumor storm brewing that he has tested positive for banned substances after defeated former champion John Ruiz on April 30. VAN NUYS, Calif. (May 11, 2005) James Toney has fought many fights in his career, but the one apparently facing him now is one that disturbs and revolts him like no other opponent could ever do. "Being accused of taking performance enchancing substances is an insult to me. I don't do drugs period," Toney stated. "I've never used any illegal substances to prepare myself for a fight." Toney's body doesn't reflect a fighter taking mass muscle substances, nor would anyone in their right mind be taking any banned substances, while knowingly and willingly giving urine samples. Toney's weight loss was substantial from the day the fight was announced to the event, totally inconsistent with the signs of an athlete using substances to add muscle mass. "Toney received medical treatment for recovery from his biceps and triceps surgery last year. His doctor has stated that the combination of medications used to control the inflammation and tissue growth caused the positive test result," stated Dan Goossen, Toney's promoter. "This is further supported, since the body, in combination with the medications, naturally create the form of substance ("Nandrolone") reflected in the test results." Goossen further stated, "It would be unjust for the sport to reprimand a fighter who was under a doctor's care and direction many months before in healing a career threatening injury."

Im not one for cheating, so if Toney is guilty he needs to own up. But to give Ruiz the belt back, argh. What a disappointment to boxing fans.

NNNNNoooooOOOOOooooooOOOOoooooOOOOO!!!!!! He just won't go away, will he!?!?! He's got to be the only guy in the history of boxing to lose a heavyweight title to two middleweights...and it looks like he's still going to walk away with a belt?!?! Man, I think he should change his nickname to "The Teflon John Ruiz" because you can't even make a loss stick to this guy.

...Im absolutely bewildered by the turd. He is definitely a freak. They should match him up with Tua and get rid of him for good. This is also a reflection of how bad the heavyweight division has become. No contenders, just pretenders.

Vitali doesnt impress me at all but thats just me. Something about him just doesnt do it for me.

Think a little lower than lightweight through the Jr Welters is pretty damn thick at the moment. Lots of kickin matchups with guys moving up down and around those weights. Ive always dug on the lighter fellas.

P.S. In contradiction to what people say Vitaly Klitschko is very skilled and fun to watch

P.S.S. Current lightweight devision is the most talanted division of all time (person to disagree with this will get owned)

...dude, if I wanted to get owned, I'd start up an argument with my wife. :D (just teasin').

I totally agree with your second comment, basically from Super Featherweight to Super Welterweight, the boxing and talent is just great right now.

As for the Heavyweights, I don't really think Vitaly Klitschko has proven his talent level yet. I'd like to see the round robin tournament Don King has been proposing to unify the belts. You've got to have the 'best' fighting each other, so I guess that means Byrd, Rahman, Ruiz and Klitschko. Let them all fight and figure out who's best. Until that's been done, none of them are legit or 'undisputed' in my book.

...that's just my two cents. :)

An in-shape and well trained Rahman beats any heavyweight right now. Including Klutzko. Id like to see what this Samuel Peter brings to the table once he meets some real heavyweights too. I really dont think the round robbin tournament is going to solidify with Klutzko having a different promoter from the rest.

I saw an interview with Don King the other day and they asked him if he would allow Klutzko into a round robin. King said he really wanted Klitschko in there so he could prove his boxers are better. We'll have to see if he follows through.

I agree 100% about Rahman, he's had some really bad luck in the past few years, but I think he's the most legit of the top 5 out there right now.

As for Samuel Peter, I haven't seen him fight yet but I've heard he's probably the future, I look forward to seeing him in action.

WBA reinstates John Ruiz!

"To all of the ***holes who want me out of the game...I'm back!" That's what heavyweight John Ruiz said after Team Ruiz was notified yesterday by the WBA that it has reinstated John "The Quietman" Ruiz as WBA heavyweight champion, effectively immediately. A WBA letter adressed to James Toney read: "Based on the actions of the New York State Athletic Commission and the test results on which the Commission relied, the WBA must vacate your championship ranking and reinstate John Ruiz as the champion." Ruiz' April 30 loss to James "Lights Out" Toney was changed to a "No Decision" after Toney failed the New York State Athletic Commission's illegal substance policy, testing positive for the steroid, Nandrolone. Toney was suspended 90 days and fined $10,000 by the NYSAC, in addition to being barred from fighting for the WBA title for two years.

what happened to the good ol' days when you could watch boxing purely for the raw entertainment.  When i see boxing today its too clean, I want to see ears bit off!

Erm... thats what ruins boxing. Especially since that fight is what caused Mills Lane to retire disgusted at the circus act that some may call Iron Mike, better known as Aluminum Mike.
