Hey,

Yesterday, I uninstalled Mcafee antivirus. Due to the first-rate reviews on NOD32, I planned to try it. It detected 3 Trojans and 1 key logger that Mcafee didn?t perceive. It seems to be low on resources. I have several inquires for people who have been using this program for a extensive time and are veteran with NOD32 and supplementary anti-viruses. As a gamer, I forage for anti-virus software which is both fast & excellent in detecting threats. Is NOD32 better than Mcafee? In scanning the answer is yes. But what about system resources is NOD32 better for me? Also, is NOD32?s usage of 15 mega bytes of memory normal or not? Can I stop NOD32 from scanning the files I open on local disk [D] which restrains only games? Can I make boot scans in order to scan used files?

Finally, is NOD32 the best anti-virus for threats & system resources that money can buy? Which is better Kaspersky Anti-Virus or NOD32?

Thanks for your help,

Hani

How many viruses does NOD32 detect?

Since use of heuristics extends the detection capabilities beyond a specific set of known viruses, there is no exact total number of viruses detected by NOD32. Of course, there is no antivirus program that detects absolutely all viruses in the world. To improve detection of not yet known viruses, NOD32 uses a sophisticated heuristic techniques. If you find a suspicious file which is not reported by NOD32 as infected, please send it to samples@eset.com for analysis

I switched from Kaspersky to NOD32, as Kaspersky is far too intrusive (scans take a long time) - also, everything seems to point to NOD32 have better detection and protection. The only problem I have with NOD32 is that the internet scanning (of .gif's, .jpg's, etc) is too slow, though it has caught plenty of trojans/viruses on dodgy sites (popups, etc).

Hopefully 2.5 will improve things, as I haven't upgraded yet - I wanted to wait to see reviews of it first, as too many updates b0rk things up (ZoneAlarm springs to mind).

congratulations. mcafee and norton both deserve to die.

for your kasp vs. nod32 question, it is said that kasp has better detection rates but takes up way more system resources. in your case, i would keep nod32, it's good enough for your needs; fast scans, low memory usage and one of the best detection rates.

ok thanks, anybody can anwser the following questions:

Yes, you can add an exclusion into the realtime monitor (AMON) - under Setup click 'Exclusion', then 'Add', then 'Directory', then the drive you want excluded; it treats a drive as if it were a directory.

I don't know about boot-time scanning.

I personally like Kaspersky better than NOD32 but they are both good. I think that NOD has started to take up more resources than in older versions, I like Kaspersky better in that respect.

:yes: agree.. and kaspersky internet suite 2006(beta) has a giant bucket of improvements...

What's wrong with AVG?  It's free and it works great...

the fact that it's protection isn't very solid is what's wrong. this is my opinion but avg has failed countless times to catch viruses. if you want to stay free, i recommend avast, but nod32 is still the best imo.

just for the sake of comparison:

On-demand detection of virus/malware (TOTALS):

Norton Anti-Virus : 379.562 --> 98,31%

NOD32 Anti-Virus: 368.746 --> 95,50%

KAV Personal: 384.743 --> 99,65%

I just think that it's important to look at some numbers when choosing which way you wanna go. You can check the numbers for more antivirus in the page.

Just my opinion ;)
