patseguin Global Moderator Posted June 6, 2005 Global Moderator Share Posted June 6, 2005 Will they still call it "Mac OSX"? If it will run on x86 computers, I presume they may not have to be Apple hardware (Mac's)? dougal.s
I would think they would lock it down to specific hardware, because they are a software and a hardware company! Dougal. -Dave-
"10:38 am Mathematica 5 for Mac OS X was ported to Intel last week...in just two hours. Working version in 20 hours. A couple dozen lines of code had to be changed." I have tosay thats pretty darn impressive!! Least the devs will be happy with that one! OSX multi platform all along. Apple, how the hell did u keep such a thing under wraps with only minor leaks that every1 discounted!!! i think the Government needs to take notes at data security lol Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/328955-official-wwdc-2005-keynote-discussion/page/5/#findComment-586025007 Share on other sites
GaMMa
Microsoft must be a little shaken by this announcement, especially after iPod's huge success. My next PC will probably be a Mac (running Linux), I was holding off due to the sketchy PPC/Airport Extreme support [for Linux], but now I have no reason not to switch. Hopefully these laptops have battery life equivilent to the ones out there now. Ryan Hoffman
All I know is, this is a double edged sword. Apple will be the only company selling OS X on their Macs, you're not going to be able to go out and buy a Dell with Mac OS X. If Apple PC's become more "mainstream" they are opened up to spyware / viruses because people will actually have a reason to target them now. Funny thing is, we've been dealing with spyware for so long on Windows, that we know how to deal with it and there are good apps to take care of it. Theres nothing like that for Mac OS X, and that will take a while ;-). b mitchell
Now I'm torn. I was going to get a Mac for this fall, but I dont know now. The real question is going to be how does the x86 hardware perform under pressure with Mac OSX. Is there going to be a downside/upside to either hardware set. This changes everything. alastair04
Any indication as to whether the x86 port of Mac OS X, will also work with AMD's x86 implementation, or whether Apple will find a way of locking it to the implementation in the Pentium? Thanks. Just bought myself a new AMD64 PC and rather like the idea of a Windows 2006 x64/Mac OS X 10.5 dual boot in 18 months time :p Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/328955-official-wwdc-2005-keynote-discussion/page/5/#findComment-586025015 Share on other sites

rec_kris
this does seem rather great . . i think. even if i don't decide to switch, it is fun knowing that a ton of mac users are not knowing what to do now that they're special little OS won't be quite as special anymore. in the end , isn't this what mac users were calling for, a "switch" ? Steve Jobs "switched" the opposite way :D :D :D Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/328955-official-wwdc-2005-keynote-discussion/page/5/#findComment-586025034 Share on other sites

NetRyder
10:46 am While most software is just a recompile away, some will remain PPC-only. For that, there's Rosetta. Binary instruction translation, in real time. Runs PowerPC code on Intel-baesd Macs. Transparent to users. Pretty fast. Jobs demos Rosetta used to run PowerPC macs on Intel-based Macs. Jobs shows Microsoft Excel/Word running on Intel-based Mac (without any porting and/or recompiling). Jobs also shows Photoshop CS2 with all plugins that are translated and run on Intel-based Mac without significant speed decrease. Collaboration with Transitive, anyone? :D Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/328955-official-wwdc-2005-keynote-discussion/page/5/#findComment-586025037 Share on other sites
Mongrel
HAHAHA this is hilarious, as a switcher FROM the Mac 4 years ago. Now we get to see how OS X really performs, when you stop blaming the hardware. Interface is still obnoxious.
