azcodemonkey
I actually liked the look of the original Mac's. A lot better than the PC from the same time. 586027022 Without doubt they looked better than the IBM clones. As much as I loved my Amiga(talk about your beige turd), I don't pine for those days. @iconboy I sincerely doubt there is going to be a G5 Powerbook. I love my G4, but if I were you, I'd wait. joseph-
Considering Steve Jobs put the G5 Powerbook up on a giant screen as an (implied) broken promise...I wouldn't hold your breath. PureEdit
It sounds like ppc will be supported for a long time still, 10.5 will probably be the last system to support it completely. I am going to be getting a iMac G5 this summer, its not like the transition is going to happen overnight and all ppc stuff will be obsolete instantly. NeoXY
so i guess this means no G5 Powerbook :( Steve said they werent able to pull it off :( now im torn, take a chance and wait for a G5 Powerbook, or just bute the bullet and buy a G4 Powerbook! 586027122 he said they can't pull it off with IBM...he never said anything about not doing it with Intel...hell. That is the reason why he is moving... To get a G5 powerbook and to hit 3GHz on the PowerMacs... for all who saw the keynote, we see the intel chip giving out almost 3 times more power (I think that's it, correct me if Im wrong) per watt than the PowerPC chips...don't worry...it'll come..:) @pure....Steve introduced something called universial binary. And once the program is compiled in Xcode to Universial Binary, it can than run on both the x86 arch and the PowerPC arch...so no worries there m8 Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/328955-official-wwdc-2005-keynote-discussion/page/16/#findComment-586027217 Share on other sites

tsiris
If what Phil said is true, and Windows ends up running on a Mac box then count me in.Windows during the day for work + OS X for out of work + gorgeous Apple laptop + Intel tech = Dazzla a happy guy. 586026457 I can't agree more. If this will be possible, I will change both of my remaining pc's with macs. And maybe change my powerbook as well. joeydoo
Do you think they will go with the pentiumM processors they are vastly better than P4 chips. They are the ones that have the best heat/performance rating and with proper non laptop memory/bus speeds they would even be able to beat the FX55. They will probably advance those with a ramped up speed to the 3GHZ and dual of course. They would be formidable. I was hoping they would be available for PC's. Whatever they have they won't be P4's. the P4 is dead. roxics
For anybody looking at holding off on buying a new mac, consider this... I seems everybody always tries to futureproof their purchases. Well it's a good idea in theory, but nothing is really all that future proof. Eventually you'll need to buy a new machine if you want to do new things with it. And there will always be a new machine. Instead buy a machine for what you want to use if for right now. Don't worry about two years from now. In two years that same machine will still be able to do what it does right now. Just like an old typewriter from the 1940's can still type papers today. There will always be a way to transfer what's really important, your photos, writing, music and videos. MonkeyClaw Veteran Posted June 7, 2005 Veteran Share Posted June 7, 2005 bingo, at first i was worried bout my brand new g4 pb being obsolete, but in the end, it doesnt matter. apple wont bail on us, os x will still be backwards compatible with ppc for quite a while so i am not worried. i think in the end, this will be a good thing for apple meaning a good thing for teh consumer. remember, in 2 years the transition will be complete. that means in 2 years, there will still be ppc macs, meaning there will have to be ppc version of software. that means 10.6 will be ppc compatible too i can bet. that also means that for a while after 07, there will still be ppc versions out, and from what i hear, they are going to implement the emulation in the os so its transtionless. i can still use my g4 pb for years to come. Chadwick
Everything apple does is critisized, and after it happens everyone bites their tongues, you guys really need to let it go and watch what happens. You will not know the difference between a g5 powerpc and an intel powerpc once it happens, you will not feel a difference in the software. Apple is not going to do anything stupid and they are not going to change what works. There is a 99% chance not a single p4 on the market will be in the powerpc released with the first intel chips, im sure hte dothan line will make its way into the powerbooks in some form, but you wont be able to tell. Dont forget, apple would NOT come to the market in 2 years with a powerpc slower than the dual g5, so expect big things. MonkeyClaw Veteran Posted June 7, 2005 Veteran Share Posted June 7, 2005 ok this angers me, it will not stream to my pb at all! its just sitting here with the little loading image going back and forth and back and forth! i let it sit for over an hour and still, nothing... there has to be a download link somewhere... back on topic (not that above was off per say...) chadwick is right, apple wouldnt do this if it didnt help the consumer out, im not too worried anymore Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/328955-official-wwdc-2005-keynote-discussion/page/16/#findComment-586027490 Share on other sites
icecaveman
Watching this keynote makes a man wonder what could have so seriously messed up Steve's brain? He refers to the "major" OSX releases and compares them to a one single Windows XP release. Hello you [NASTY LANGUAGE] Windows XP has matured far since it's release, Service Pack 2 for one is bigger than MOST of the so called "major" OSX releases, it didn't cost money now did it? Windows Desktop Search how much does that cost? Not to mention Windows XP Media Center Edition 2004 and 2005, TapletPC and other Windows variants far more different from the original XP than most of the OSX releases. Windows XP Professional x64... Sure there has nothing major been going on there like changes to DirectX, .NET, Windows Media and other technologies that have system wide effects on Windows. Joshie
Is this weird of me? I totally dig the idea of buying a future Mac and dual booting Windows on it, but... But...building computers from scratch is so fun! I love learning about all the parts and feeling like my computer is an accomplishment, yanno? And here it sounds like, even tho' MacOS will see its not-so-shocking debut on x86 hardware, I can't use it on a system I personally build. All I really want to know about this whole mess is, will we be able to simply buy Apple motherboards? To do with as we see fit? Or is it going to be all-or-nothing? MonkeyClaw Veteran Posted June 7, 2005 Veteran Share Posted June 7, 2005 prob all or nothing icecaveman, yea they didnt cost money, but then again they werent really that good ;) j/k j/k for me, the "extra security" in sp2 just made things worse and i dunno sp2 just didnt really impress me at all, not that that matters but i dont think it offered nearly as much as tiger did to my mac. tiger is faster, offers more stability, and well windows search utility is nice, but it isnt built in, as in it isnt integrated into the system. then the other features tiger offers makes it alot bigger than a service pack update, but thats just me... No OS X release has been that poor. Even 2k to XP was not that great of update, it was about the same as 10.3 > 10.4, some nice features and updated stuff, but mostly the same as the previous version. Steve didnt mention all of the small updates and component updates to OS X either, why would he mention them about windows? Should he have also mentioned the 20+ new versions of the linux kernel that have been released since OS X came out? MonkeyClaw Veteran Posted June 7, 2005 Veteran Share Posted June 7, 2005 Claw then Why don't you comment on MCE and Tablet? 586027557 well i dont have the right to since i have never used them. i dont have a need for mce and i dont own a tablet. im just commenting on sp2 cause i have experience with it and i can say that tiger is def a bigger update than sp2 was. dont get me wrong this wasnt meant as a flame, just my opinion on that argument... but on the topic of mce and tablet, i have never used either so i really have a stand on either. Mike Frett
Perhaps this has been answered already but, I hear people saying Apple left IBM because they couldn't produce. Now, if they can't produce then how the hell are the consoles gonna get their PowerPC chips? I think Apple just got ****ed at IBM because they are supplying consoles with uber chips and not Apple's Mac's. I can understand why they chose Intel instead of AMD though, they feel Intel can supply the quantity better. But wasn't Intel having problems not so long ago supplying their chips? And I havn't heard a damn thing about Intel's DRM in Mac's, why arn't people complaining? And why didn't they try (I'm sure they did) to work something out with AMD since they have the cooler running/faster chips, or does this deal only apply to Laptops (Pentium M)?. Lot's of very valid questions/conspiracies here. -Edit:- Did I post this in the wrong thread? :o Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/328955-official-wwdc-2005-keynote-discussion/page/16/#findComment-586027675 Share on other sites
icecaveman
One of many things could have driven IBM mad, for example the way Apple treated the G5s as they had done the major part in engineering those chips and continusly downplayd IBMs part in the design.
