I tried Lindows, and haven't cared for it.

The first time, I ever tried installing it, it just hanged at the Lindows installation image.

The next time, I tried it, it also hanged at the boot screen, but finally went into the installation process. When it did install, I started it up, and tried running MS Word, didn't work. All I noticed is the ability to run a bunch of software that are all shareware for Lindows. I was not impressed with the GUI, the stability was worse then Win2K/XP, the use of console is limited, so for that I stick with Slackware or Redhat, or at least a Linux Distro that has full console capabilities, as alot of my work is command-line only, such as administering mysql.

My advice, don't bother, if you're really curious to see what it's all about, go to Wal-mart when they start selling the machines preinstalled with Lindows and just tool around with their machines. I wouldn't waste the time to install it, buy it, or download it. One one brighter note, i did gain 2 more coasters to my collection.

..its in development.. you cant possible expect the 2nd release to be perfect.. i'd love to try it out.. one thing i wish lindows had was EASY customization.. themes and stuff

I am fully aware that it is still in development stage, but I'm afraid that alot of the good functions of Linux will not be included in the final build of Lindows. If the sole purpose of running Lindows is to use your windows apps, then just use Windows(Since there has to be a Windows partition already installed for Lindows) or W.I.N.E. in Redhat or Slackware or whatever distro you use.

And has anyone noticed that Lindows is missing an SSH client? I hope that is a fluke, because SSH capability is a big part of linux and one of the many more secure functions.

The only apps I got to work successfully in Lindows were the following: Notepad, Calculator and Internet Explorer to some degree.

Yeah it's in development, but development versions of Redhat, Slackware, even Mandrake are never this crippled.

My last gripe is the boot up time. It took about 5 minutes for it to boot into a gui. Redhat and Slackware both take under 1 minute to load (even with MYSQL and Postgrel both enabled).

You can try Lindows, but I gurantee that you'll be cussing yourself out for wasting your time with it as opposed to installing a real Linux distro. And seriously unless they offer a personal version on the net to download for free, Lindows won't survive more then a year. One of the nicest things about being in the Linux community has always been the abilitiy to download any of the distros of the net, even if you had to pay for them in the store(like Redhat).

With Lindows charging right off the bat, they need to change their business practices a bit. The least they could do is offer a free public beta for the average user. How else do they expect people to see what it's all about. It's based on open source, so play by the open source rules.

When it was first talked about (I think I saw it first on Betanews) it looked like an interesting idea. XP wasnt out yet (still in beta) and they had promising screens of Outlook 2000 and IE5 running on this Linux desktop.

Since they started charging $99 for the efforts of open source coding (which is free elsewhere) and this "Click N Run" was introduced I decided it was more like vapourware. This Click N Run (unless you are blind and totally dumb) is the main reason behind Lindows. It's where they will be able to sell you targetted products (in between alot of free ones) which is where the money will be made. It will only work with Lindows (not other Linux distros) Not to mention the back down of being able to run "most" Windows applications. Unless I can download MSN Messenger and install it on that platform without having to be a geek what good is it over Mandrake?

It is TOTAL Vapourware and a farce to the otherwise good spirited Linux community who roll out decent stuff like Mandrake, Slackware and Redhat (among many other quality releases)

That they also rode their publicity of the name Windows by simply replacing the W with an L makes it worse, especially as they even use Windows in their slogans to rip people off.

I dont like it. Sorry for extending your attention spans with this post but England lost and I'm ****ed off LOL
