SaLiVa
I wonder if this is good news or bad. He's probably the only boxer I know other than Muhammad Ali :p 39 is an old age though - Parkinson's disease is just waiting... Matt
Tyson Quits Fight and May Quit Boxing NextBy CLIFTON BROWN Published: June 12, 2005 WASHINGTON, June 11 - The controversial career of Mike Tyson reached another low Saturday night when he quit on his stool after the sixth round and lost to the journeyman heavyweight Kevin McBride. Gary Hershorn/Reuters Mike Tyson struggled to get up at the end of the sixth round, then quit before the next round. If this does not convince the public that Tyson (50-6) is washed up, perhaps nothing will. A crowd of 15,472 at the MCI Center could hardly believe what it witnessed as Tyson refused to come out for the beginning of the seventh round, and McBride (33-4-1) and his corner began a celebration that few people expected. Tyson looked as if he wanted to quit a few moments earlier, when he fell to the canvas at the end of the sixth round, as McBride was leaning on him. Tyson had not been hit, but he looked exhausted, and it took him about 20 seconds to get up, and he looked almost unable to stand. Tyson finally rose and walked to his corner, but he never answered the bell for the seventh round. Tyson has been stopped in three of his last four fights, and he will turn 39 this month. This performance will further hurt his credibility, and after declaring bankruptcy in 2003, Tyson's financial future looks as bleak as his career. "I don't have the guts to stay in the sport anymore," Tyson said after the fight, perhaps indicating that he was finally ready to quit. "I most likely won't fight anymore. I won't disrespect the sport by losing to a fighter of this caliber." What would a Tyson fight be without controversy? It began in the sixth round, when Tyson began to fight dirty because he was getting desperate. Early in the round, Tyson reverted to one of his old tricks, twisting McBride's left arm as they clinched, seemingly in an effort to hurt McBride intentionally. A few moments later, Tyson head-butted McBride, opening a cut above McBride's left eye. The referee Joe Cortez temporarily halted the bout and took 2 points from Tyson for the head butt. The momentum shifted to McBride in the fifth round, his best of the fight. He connected with a short right hook to Tyson's chin that appeared to hurt Tyson. Tyson leaned against the ropes in the corner, and although he survived that round, it was clear he was no longer in control of the fight. Taller fighters have long given trouble to Tyson, who stands 5 feet 11 inches. At 6-6, McBride made it difficult for Tyson to get inside. But losing to McBride, an obscure 32-year-old fighter from Ireland, moved Tyson's career to a new low. With his hand speed considerably slower than it was in his prime, and no longer possessing the punching power that used to be his trademark, Tyson never appeared to hurt McBride. Tyson's stamina has also become a major issue. Although he weighed in at a respectable 233 pounds, he was clearly not in shape to fight 10 rounds, even though he was not hit with many punishing blows. http://www.nytimes.com/2005/06/12/sports/o...s/12boxing.html Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/331220-tyson-quits-boxing/#findComment-586052143 Share on other sites

DirtyLarry Veteran Posted June 12, 2005 Veteran Share Posted June 12, 2005 I hope he does retire.? Boxing is enough of a circus without Tyson. 586052154 Agreed. However, I am 30 years old, and Iron Mike has come and gone right before my very eyes, and is definitely the reason I ever became a fan of the sport to begin with. I can still remember being about 10 years old ,watching him fight on Saturday night's with my Father. These were the days when HBO was still somewhat of a marvel to have because it was on "Cable TV." which even though at that point was already around for about 10 years, was still something to marvel at with all its 50 or so channels. It was truly an amazing thing to be able to witness Tyson in his prime. Thanks for the memories Mike. All Of Them. The Good, The Bad, and n doubt The Ugly as well. He's not convicted on one charge, mind you, it's countless times that he's been to jail. eg- beating more than one motorist! (http://www.southcoasttoday.com/daily/02-99...99/c01sp093.htm) I wouldn't say he's the sanest person alive, and really he's a product of the 'sport' / circus that he chose as his occupation. Sure, us in the computer industry suffer some maladies from our profession - carpal tunnel, too much caffine, monitor tan, but he chose his profession to match his skills in life = violence. Matt
The trouble was that we only got to watch him for about 38 seconds at a time. 586052257 reminds me of the martin episode when they were trying to get his new satellite working all day just to end up watching a 5 second match. BMac
Mike Tyson was a truly remarkable fighter. I have never seen anyone of this era who was as explosive as he was in his prime. For those that say that after this fight he is now washed up, you are sadly mistaken. Mike Tyson has not been the same since the shocker of when Buster Douglas beat him. That is when the monster in the ring just turned into a monster. This has been coming for a long, LONG, time. I thank Mike for the memories and hold nothing against him. He was one of the most entertaining athletes I have ever seen. Tyson showed us the good, the bad and the ugly side of himself, but I wouldn't trade the memories for anything. Thanks Mike. It was a blast. Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/331220-tyson-quits-boxing/#findComment-586053703 Share on other sites
Acezo
Kind of disappointing to see him go out like this, but somehow I was certain this fight was McBride's. christracy
i remember going to my cousin's house to watch tyson fight spinks on hbo, all 90 seconds of it!! he was a beast in the ring but not quite as quotable, and to some degree entertaining, as he has been since he got out of jail. i still question desiree washington truthfulness in that rape conviction something just didn't seem right and i'd LOVE to know where she is now years later. I just know wouldn't be the first time a woman was used to bring a great boxer down. (jack johnson). but i digress it was great to see him reign and while the downfall was long time coming it was entertaining nonetheless with bitten ears and eaten children and in the end we can all say he went out like a gutted fish. peace be with you mike! metallithrax
Why do people always bring the "legalized violence" thing into any thread about boxing. The boxers want to box, the audience want to watch it. If you don't, then don't. Tyson should have been banned from boxing years ago anyway. Tyson was a good fighter, but it got too much for him. Too much money etc. Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/331220-tyson-quits-boxing/#findComment-586053983 Share on other sites
