RocketDock v1.0

Question

RocketDock v1.0.1

A new application launcher has come to contend with the already popular ObjectDock, Y'z Dock, andMobyDock. Punk! Software has released the first official version of RocketDock.

RocketDock-Bottom.png

RocketDock is a smoothly animated, alpha-blended application launcher that is similar to Y'z Dock. RocketDock renders quickly like MobyDock, has the visual sharpness of AquaDock, and the stability that neither seem to possess.

It is compatible with every dock skin format we are aware of. In fact, if you have a skin that doesn't load properly, send it to us, along with a screenshot of what it should look like and we'll see what we can do about integrating the format...

Features:

  • Runs smooth on slower computers
  • Alpha-blended PNG icons
  • Fully customizable
  • True multi-monitor support
  • Simple drag-n-drop interface
  • Compatible with Y'z Dock, Mobydock, ObjectDock, and AquaDock skins

You can downlaod it at Punk! Software.

Changelog:

v1.0.1 (20/6/2005)

  • Fixed CPU draining when moving the mouse
  • Fixed bug preventing real-time preview of some options
  • Fixed missing scrollbars on Icon Folder-View
  • Added AstroLife Skin
  • Replaced foood icons with PSW icons

bangbang023, I really do appreciate the nice comments. I do realize you can't make everyone happy. Just the way it works. Only thing I can do is tailor the app to my own personal needs and add different features as I see fit. RocketDock I think is a good frist start. No it does not have some of the features other docks do, but it will grow. Do give it a try, it might not replace your current dock application but it might give you a glimpse at what I am trying to accomplish.

JakeM741, Thank you. :D

Pallab, you can downlaod some Y'z Dock themes at Aqua-Soft.org

To those who keep commenting on Y'z Dock being a better app, I respect your choice. Hopefully when RocketDock is further in development it might change your mind. I do understand it does not meet everyone's needs.

Opacity is one of my favorite options when it comes to dock backgrounds. :)

We just got our development blog up for those who want to follow RocketDock. In the next day or two there will be a beta released. So keep an eye out. I am sure you can figure out what the blog will be utalized as when you see it.

Enjoy!

Hi, First of all NICE PROGRAM :) Have to say this is the first program of its kind that I have tried, and enjoying it very much!

Just have one question, how much memory is it suppose to use? I havn't observed this app for long, but sometimes when I open it its using around 18mb (which is fair enough) but sometimes after I change some settings it can go way up to using around 110mb

I have 1gb of ram so running out of ram is not my immediate concern but maybe there's a memory leak somewhere?

Just thought I'd let you know and see if you can fix it up

Nice work! Keep it up!

I have 10 icons and only run about 7.1MB at most. With the roll overs I go up maybe to 7.5mb. I keep my running all day. On my box at home I have had the same config running for 2 days now with no memory leaks. Sounds like someone has issues with the boxen not the program.

I too have 10 icons, I restarted the program now only takes 6mb, I suspect that the program size increase is due to me trying to find some custom icon in the settings menu, since I have a large number of icons in each folder.

Just a thought :D

Mmm, this is my first post. But anyway. I love the program! I didnt like Yz's so much, it was choppy, and ate up half my CPU, this loads up quck, and only maxes out at about 6 megs of ram, even with like 50 percent transparancy, and big ol' pngs. which is GREAT seeing as how i only have like 526 or so. I donno, docklet support is... It is good. I can live with out it, casue I'm going with the minimalist theme right now. But in the future. Some... (stupid) ideas i had, would be like. Different like, "profiles" or whatever, like, I could have a different set of Icons for gaming, photoshop, web site making, progaming, bloggig, just general, etc etc etc. And when i first start up rocket dock, that I could like, select which profile i want, just using like different icons, on the dock it self, and then there would be an icon on all the different profiles to go back to the "root" profile thing. Its free, fast, and still in devolpment. I like it, im sticking with it. I hope it only gets better.

And skin dude up there  , I like it! it matches the blue HmmXP visual style, quite nicely, and the neowin web page :p

Ok let's see here, get some updates going on RocketDock. We have been very hard at work on 1.1 Core has been completely rewritten. So RocketDock is officially unicode compliant. We also have a number of people volunteering to translate RocketDock. You can check out the supported languages at http://www.punkproject.com

This changelog is going to be the biggest yet. Many many bug fixes and lots of efficiency implimentations. So this new version will use less RAM and CPU. There will also be a new Icon set again. Sorry for the last set. We know it was ugly but we did it as fast as possible to get RocketDock back up. i promise this set is much nicer. We also have a few new themes.

Oh and for those of you wondering about ObjectDock skins compatability, completely fixed for 1.1 as well. So all ObjectDock skins will work (NOT ObjectDock Plus) Well, that is all I can think of right now. Sorry I haven't been on much. Lots and lots of work lately. Trying to get out a beta for our translators to use so everything can get updated. Keep an eye out! (Oh and Docklets and task management will NOT appear in 1.1)

I think this is the best dock available for Windows. The speed is just the best part when compared to those popular OD & Yz. But I really miss some of my Sysstat stuff like CPU Usage, Weather etc. But then, if the docklets can decrease the speed then, I wouldnt mind if they werent in.....

Eagerly waiting for the v1.1 and want to see some really cool icons & default skin this time around.

I'm eagerly awaiting 1.1. I finally set up RKLauncher and realized it's not for me. I have a feeling RocketDock 1.1 will finally replace OD for me.

We have RocketDOck 1.1.1 out.

Realease Notes/Changelog

If you are using 1.1.0 this is a rather minor update. We just added some small bug fixes. This release was mainly for additional language support.

Download

And raduking it was really not intentional, I promise you.

Pallab the different between OD+ themes and OD themes is that OD+ is shareware, so we respect Stardock and will not read their format, plus it has many feautres OD themes don't. Tabs for example. Anywho, since RocketDock 1.1.0 ObjectDock skin support has been drasticly improved. So it now actually should display any OD theme correctly. You can download themes at deviantART, WinCusomize, and I would gather Customize.org

D!rtySh@dy Yes you can use ObjectDock and Y'z Dock themes...you can also use MobyDock themes. To download them see the last sentence to Pallab's reply. :)

@raduking

I'm the one responsible for the name RocketDock.

History of the name:

- The name was originally FutureDock.

- When we optimized it to be faster than most docks, we changed to RocketLauncher. (for the obvious reason)

- Finally, we realized there were already 2 programs called RocketLauncher, and changed it to RocketDock.

Personally I don't see any similarities between "RocketDock" and "RK Launcher". RK doesn't even stand for Rocket, it stands for RaduKing right? (correct me if I'm wrong)

Anyways, I really didn't mean to step on anybody's toes, I'm just trying to make some fun software.

Uggg, something in that foood didn't agree with us ;)

I'll be the first to say it: The cheap shot at foood in your changelog is immature and makes you people look like fools. I won't download the new version until it's removed and, no, I'm not kidding.

@bangbang023

That quote was obviously meant as a light-hearted joke (hence the wink). :)

I'm sure you would agree that people are alowed to 'rib' eachother now and again. We've contacted foood about the icon matter and cleared things up long ago.

If you don't believe people have the right to poke a little fun now and again, that is perfectly alright, and I'm sorry you won't be using RocketDock. However, please don't insult my intelligence while trying to take the high-ground.

I agree with moloko. I've found docks to be nothing more than resource cgobbling chunks of eye-candy. They don't promote sense memory because the icons are constantly shifting position, which to me is an example of poor human interface design.

I prefer ShortPopUp. It's highly configurable, uses very little resources, and only runs when you open a menu. Basically, you create a shortcut that points to a folder, then SPU runs it as a menu. Here's a screenie of my desktop, where I've created some menus in a quicklaunch toolbar docked in the left side of my screen. (The icons with borders are SPU menus.)
