devyant
Opera's FTP is kinda screwed for me. Takes a long time to respond to any FTP requests. Epidemik, gotta agree it'll bloat the browser, but the .torrent files are becoming a popular way of distributing files. Opera's recent integration might make it even better, so as to say, maybe IE 7 should have this too. Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/340914-opera-802-build-7668-bittorrent-technical-preview/page/3/#findComment-586181026 Share on other sites
waurbind
is the torrent support any good or is it just enough to get by,does it support trackerless torrents, and will i be able to use another torrent client or will it override them from now on? sanctified Veteran Posted July 8, 2005 Veteran Share Posted July 8, 2005 Yeah.well, this will be nice to see, more browsers should support downloading torrents. 586181033 I dont see the point of having a hard coded Bittorrent protocol handler in a browser when I can download a tiny program that manages the protocol for all my browsers. Not only is it stupid to integrate it into a browser, but bit torrents are pretty much useless as far as legal means go. Torrents still do not have enough support from legal sources to deem this a necessary feature of a browser. I read somewhere else that Firefox has this planned, but I hope that's not true. They do wonders for linux distros so if you are an aficionado or just curious then you can trust them. Still I see your point since I dont see another use of bittorrent beyond warez and maybe the couple of obscure software houses who manages their downloads via bittorrent. Edit: I believe its planned in Firefox but just as a separate plugin. Makeshift Hammer
The usage of BitTorrent for legal purposes could be given a boost by this. It gives it an extra degree of legitmacy that it didn't have before (it already had some as you said due to *nix distros etc.) It's a good idea, but since some sites seem to work better with different BT apps (something i still don't understand, but seems to be a fact, for me at least) it'd be having just one more as opposed to a reason to ditch the others. Good start though. Now all they have to do is figure out why you sometimes have to swap apps about for different trackers (and why some sites ban certain ones.) +unabatedshagie Subscriber¹ Posted July 8, 2005 Subscriber¹ Share Posted July 8, 2005 Let's bloat Opera even more!?: 586181010 The bittorentprotocol> (and thats all it is) only add's 24Kb to the total size of opera. I would hardley call it bloat. If you don't download torrents you will not even know it there. As much as I like all these topics about opera exactly how many do we need, there's one in the opera sub-forum and the another one in bpn. Aparently the addition is to help with distribution opera updates etc, since opera is so popular and there servers get hit so hard whenever there is an update it's hoped that people will be able to torrent the opera updates to ease the strain on the opera servers. mu30286
i see this as a desperate attempt by the opera dev to attract new users to compete with FF but it has failed big time, at least half the current opera users hate this bt feature, as they hate the M2, anything that is not related to a browser. opera is dying sooner than i expected.
