Is there a way, extension or otherwise, to allow only ONE instance (nothing to do with tabs) of the Firefox window? For example, if I have a Firefox window open and I click a shortcut for Firefox on my desktop, it'll call up the currently open instance of Firefox instead of opening a completely new window. I've searched round the Neowin forums, and searched Google, but I can't find any answer to my question. If this has been asked many times before, then I apologise.

By the way, I'm running Windows XP SP2, with Firefox 1.0.4.

Thanks for your help, but it doesn't seem to be exactly what I'm looking for. I set the value for browser.tabs.showSingleWindowModePrefs to true, but upon further inspection that only work for hyperlinks clicked within webpages, opening them in tabs instead of a new window. What I was looking for is if a shortcut for Firefox (not a URL link) is clicked (such as the Firefox icon placed on the desktop), it will detect wether or not a Firefox browser is already open, and will call up the already opened Firefox browser instead of opening a new browser. Of course if there is no Firefox browser open, it will open a new one as normal.

I've tried to explain as clear as I can.

You should be able to find this in the TabMix extension. Check the box listed as "Enable Single Window Mode" and you should be set.

Thanks! Works great so far, but why exactly does it say (not recommended) next to the option? Does it cause conflicts somewhere?

EDIT: I think I've just found the problem. Javascript pop-ups are opened in a new tab... I didn't want that, but I'll see if I can handle it. Do you know of a way round this? The option for opening a javascript pop-ups in a new window is disabled :(

I had that extension before I installed TabMix, and I don't recall it having that option. I'm an idiot if I missed it though.

Type about:config into the address bar, then you can use the filter to find the pref. If it's not in there, right click and add a new boolean.
