if he wasn't the best cyclist ever, than more people would have more than 7 tour de frances.  they don't.  no one even has 6.

in tennis and golf, it's only the major events that matters.  in cycling, it's only the tour de france.  lance is the best, and it's not even debatable.

congrats, by the way :p

Lance is one of the greatest cyclists but not the greatest.

With miles ahead that is the Belgian Eddy Merckx

He won eleven great tours, in those days the tour wasn't as important as today.

In 1973 he did'nt participate in the tour because he wanted to win the tour of Spain wich was missing on his palmares.

Merckx won 5 times the Tour de France

He won 35 Tour Stages, rode 96 days in the yellow jersey

3 times the best climber jersey (dots)

3 times the best Sprinter jersey (green)

in 1969 he won all the jerseys in one tour + six stages, in that tour he won a stage after a solo of 130 km in the pyrenees with 8 minutes ahead of the second rider. He ended that tour with more than 17 minutes ahead.

5 times the tour of Italy (25 stages)

1 time the tour of Spain

2 times tour of Belgium

3 times world champion

7 times Milano - San Remo

5 times Liege bastogne Liege

2 times Tour of Flanders

3 times Paris-Roubaix

numerous Six days

He was elected 3 times as world sportsman of the year

he held the hour speed record for 12 years

...

Eddy Merckx wikipedia

http://www.cycling4all.com/index.php?content=analysis.php

gives a list of the best riders ever since 1892

But the supremacy of Lance the last seven years was somehow similar to the supremacy Merckx had during a whole year. They also share the will to win, the total dedication to their profession.

I would place Lance in the top 3 of best riders of all time.

Kind Regards

Stijn from Belgium
