messenger is interoperable

Recommended Posts

nuggetman: AOL is REQUIRED by FCC law to open up there IM service. that was THE selling point (or at least the one that everyone made the biggest stink over) REGARDLESS of wether they add advanced features to it, is irrevelant.

They are OBLIGATED to do so by the FCC, even if it's just basic text chat. they still HAVE to do so... and from what i found out today by looking inside msn messanger they are going to be doing it SOON... ms wouldnt waste the man power to setting up the service if AOL wasnt going to do it..

and i think MS knows more about it than you or I.. and again by the dialogs inside of the new messenger it's going to happen soon!!

No, blitzkrg, I'm afraid you're wrong. I'd like to point you to http://news.cnet.com/news/0-1005-200-4427568.html.

Scroll down about 14 lines and you'll see:

Under the conditions, AOL Time Warner must guarantee interoperability in its IM services before offering "advanced IM-based high-speed services," such as videoconferencing.

This provision does not affect AOL's current AOL Instant Messenger and ICQ services, rather it only affects future applications that would take advantage of high-speed Net access.

nuggetman:

dont mean to sound rude, but NO your wrong...

1) that link you posted doesnt exist

2) I DO NOT think your lieing, HOWEVER..

"Under the conditions, AOL Time Warner must guarantee interoperability in its IM services before offering "advanced IM-based high-speed services," such as videoconferencing.

This provision does not affect AOL's current AOL Instant Messenger and ICQ services, rather it only affects future applications that would take advantage of high-speed Net access. "

what that means is (from the quote) "Under the conditions, AOL Time Warner must guarantee interoperability in its IM services "

it says they MUST GUARUNETEE... BEFORE they create any NEW products..

however if you check this link

http://news.cnet.com/news/0-1005-200-6874533.html

you will see it says not only that the fcc requires them to update them on the status every 180 days, but that they are already testing interoperability with IBM and it even says that the new ms messenger is shipping with the capability to be interoperable..

also on a side note from that article

"When asked whether AOL plans to offer interoperability with Microsoft, AOL spokeswoman Kathy McKiernan raised concerns about the "anti-competitive elements" of XP, such as the embedding of "the messaging product into their monopoly operating system."

"These issues would have to be looked at seriously before we can consider anything in this (interoperability) area," McKiernan said"

This is just a load of horse **** from AOL.. the FCC says they freaking HAVE TO, must, no freaking way around it.. so for them to say we have to look at this and have to look at that, is just crap.. the government says they HAVE TO no if's and's or but's!!

What about that trillian program? It incorporates different IM's, doesnt it? Obviously its not as good as Micorshafts IM, but at least it is interoperable.

The Trillian progrma is OK. It's not the worst IM in the world. But, it does have some issues. It's layout is not the best. That I have to agree with. I just think MSN Messenger is a better all around IM.
